    Leonard Armstrong Recreation Center

    The City of Alexandria is in Northern Virginia and is bordered by the District of Columbia (Potomac River), Arlington and Fairfax counties.     Overview:
    In pursuit of service excellence, the Recreation Leader III performs technical recreation work. This position works as a Recreation Leader III at a revenue producing recreation facility and provides program activity information. This position will plan and initiate programs and activities for youth 5-17 years old from all backgrounds in arts and crafts, sports, games, music, drama, cooking, exercise, and field trips. Also, assist manager in developing, implementing, promoting, and center programs and generating reports for administrative purposes. An employee in this position assists to ensure that all safety precautions and guidelines are followed. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work independently, work with other Recreation Leaders, the participants, and adults to provide a safe, fun, structured and engaging atmosphere.

    Responsibility includes:
  • Plans, organize and develops recreation programs for Out Time School Program including drama, music, dancing, and arts and crafts in order to ensure that activities and events are made available to the afterschool participants and community.
  • Makes preparation for recreational activities on a particular date; opens/close site, sets up equipment /supplies, assures that the team as resources, ascertains that rules and regulations are followed, stores equipment/supplies daily, and secure the site.
  • Keeps financial assist in the operation and record keeping for on-site lunch/snack programs for youth participants, activity records and submits periodic special reports.
  • Participates in staff meetings, in-service trainings, and workshops.
  • Registers new participants using registration software, Rec Trac.
  • Shows leadership to co-workers and the community that is consistent, constructive, and positive.
  • Works creatively with colleagues to provide quality customer service and show accountability for your work responsibilities.The Recreation Leader III is part of a large multi-use revenue producing Community Recreation Facility and is involved in recreation programming. This includes the ability to lead recreational and cultural activities; instruct and guide participants utilizing the center, assist Recreation Leaders and Recreation Coordinator/ Manager in the planning of a well-rounded recreation programming. This position is provided with opportunities and encouraged to attend meetings (Center/Division), professional trainings, and be involved in Division Committees and events.

    Recreation Leader III key performance objectives (measure added for Talent Peak):
  • Daily maintenance of Rec-Trac database system by inputting data using Pass Management, Activity Registration, Cash Journal, and Facility Maintenance Modules, generating queries as they relate to customers service and administrative functions, assist and prepare facility reports.
  • Works creatively with colleagues to provide quality customer service and show accountability for your work responsibilities for the Out Time School Program. (90% accuracy based on completed assignments).
  • Demonstrate exceptional customers service, verbal, and written communications (Maintain 100% satisfactory on experience survey).
  • Plan, organizes, and implement a wide variety of activities, classes, and programs for the recreation center (Maintain 100% satisfactory on experience survey).
  • Plans, organize and develops recreation programs for Out Time School Program including drama, music, dancing, and arts and crafts in order to ensure that activities and events are made available to the afterschool participants and community. (Maintain 100% satisfactory on experience survey).
  • Demonstrate the ability to multi-task with time management (90% accuracy based on completed assignments).
  • Be proficient with Microsoft word, Power Point, Excel, Publisher, Outlook, and Adobe (90% accuracy based on completed assignments).
  • Participate in staff meetings, Division meetings, in-service training/classes, and workshops (100% attendance for all meetings/Trainings).

    Minimum & Additional Requirements

    High School Diploma and three (3) years of related experience or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. First Aid training.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Two years' experience in community recreational work performing tasks in the required area at a level equivalent to Recreation Leader II; Two year experience leading recreational and cultural activities in arts and crafts, sports, games, music, drama, cooking, exercise and field trips, or any equivalent combination completion of college-level courses in physical education, recreation, fine arts, or other related field; or any equivalent combination of experience, planning programming and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. First Aid training and CPR.

    This position requires successful completion of a criminal records background check and drug screening prior to employment.
