    Department Statement

    The Office of Corporate, Foundation, and Government Relations handles Colgate's institutional grants, faculty grants, and sponsored research.

    The mission of the office is to secure financial support from foundations, corporations, and government sources for projects supportive of Colgate's mission.

    More broadly conceived, our function is to facilitate relationships between a wide range of constituencies, both on and off campus, that will ultimately lead to support of teaching, learning, and research at Colgate.

    One particularly important part of this mission is supporting faculty who need external funding to support their research or creative work.

    We are prepared to assist faculty in locating potential sources of funding and to discuss proposal ideas, assist with budgets, or read and comment on drafts of proposals-in-progress.

    Accountabilities


    The Assistant/Associate Director works independently and in tandem with the Director and the Grants Assistant to identify, cultivate and solicit foundation and corporate prospects and government agencies.

    As such, the Assistant/Associate Director should have outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.

    The Assistant/Associate Director will, both independently and collaboratively, write and edit grant proposals, create budgets, reports, briefings, and other collateral materials for communication with corporate, foundation, and government prospects.

    Accountable for meeting advancement objectives for government agencies, foundations, and corporations. Accountable for facilitating institutional proposals and sponsored research grant and contract applications by faculty.

    Demonstrated ability to advise faculty effectively on external funding opportunities in defined fields and on compliance with agency guidelines in order to increase their likelihood of funding success.

    Accountable for ensuring proposals' compliance with university policies and agency guidelines and regulations.
    Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in institutional grant and sponsored research administration.

    Accountable for coordinating internal approval of proposals, communicating with faculty about internal reviewers' comments and corrections, and submitting proposals as required.

    Ability to effectively advise and collaborate with other university departments (e.g. Accounting, Risk Management, Dean/Provost) on university policy-making based on evolving state and federal regulations and compliance standards for grants and contracts.
    Responsible for creation and submission of effective institutional grant proposals as assigned, and subsequent reporting and stewardship.

    Professional Experience/ Qualifications


    • Excellent analytical, research, and communication skills
    • Ability to compose strong, clearly written material, including general correspondence, reports, and proposals that articulate funding priorities
    • Excellent computer skills, including advanced-level knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite, as well as with the internet, and a demonstrated ability to learn and use new applications
    • Ability to meet multiple simultaneous project deadlines under pressure

    • Understanding of higher education institutions, including curriculum, faculty development, student financial aid, and infrastructure

    Preferred Qualifications


    • 3-5 years in related fundraising/grant-writing/grant-management work in an academic or not-for-profit organization, with emphasis on writing proposals and on developing and managing complex budgets. Other related experience in grantsmanship, fundraising, communications, and/or project management in an academic setting will be considered
    • Experience working as a member of a team and interacting with clients
    • Experience working in a non-profit or higher education strongly preferred

    • BA/BS required, preferably in the arts, humanities or social sciences
    • Graduate degree preferred
