    SUMMARY:

    Looking to to take the first step into a management role? We seek a dedicated individual who will take charge of their merchandise team with direction and support from the Merchandise Management Team in carrying out a great guest experience. Merchandise Team Leads will be responsible for the daily operations and maintenance of the gift shop, to assure maximum revenue and profitability, as well as, guest satisfaction, a great team member experience and quality service. You will provide daily operating leadership, supervision, accountability and support to all Newport Aquarium Gift Shop team members.

    Required Skills

    MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Perform, adhere to, and implement all Herschend Family Entertainment Core Values and Newport Aquarium Guest Service Standards, Policies and Procedures, and Safety Protocols to ensure safe and efficient guest service operation.
    • Lead a team of 1 to 4 people (depending on the season). Responsible for the supervision of the gift shops processes and its team members.
    • Help Merchandise Management Team develop and monitor a highly motivated, positive, and productive team.
    • Assist in evaluations and training of all gift shop team members.
    • Help implement new policies and procedures when needed.
    • Maintaining accurate recording keeping involving team members, including Newport Aquarium awards and recognitions.
    • Handle comments, concerns and suggestions from team members and guests regarding the guest experience.
    • Maintain knowledge of activities, aquatic life, and Newport Aquarium special events/promotions in order to properly notify and inform guests.
    • Maintain a positive attitude and appearance at all times.
    • Must be self-motivated to work independently, as well as, disciplined and reliable.
    • Arrive on time and ready to work all scheduled shifts, and in accordance with aquarium and appearance standards.
    • Keep safety as a number one priority at all times while working at Newport Aquarium.
    • Maintain appropriate guest and team member relations at all times, ensuring guest and team satisfaction.
    • Work with other team members/departments of Newport Aquarium to ensure effective communication is implemented at all times.
    • Provide on-boarding and ongoing training to team members in order to maintain knowledge of aquarium activities and operations.
    • Perform opening and/or closing duties.
    • Make certain that proper operating procedures are being adhered to at all times, according to pre-determined guidelines.
    • Responsible for maintain Payment Card Industry (PCI) compliance.
    • On daily basis ensure that:
      • Team members are knowledgeable on location and the functions of position; if not, inform Merchandise Management Team immediately
      • Maintain store displays and ensure proper pricing, inventory and ensuring items are in stock.
      • Assisting the guests of Newport Aquarium in finding merchandise, gifts, or souvenirs and completing cash transactions.
      • Keep Gift Shop neat, orderly, and well stocked at all times.
      • All required paperwork is properly completed.
      • Courteousness, friendliness, and helpfulness are being displayed at all times.
      • Opening and closing procedures are appropriately implemented.
      • Ensuring team members are in correct uniform.
      • Maintaining proper break schedule for team members as prescribed in team member handbook.
      • Perform other related duties or tasks as assigned by the Merchandise Management Team.

    Required Experience

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • High School Diploma or equivalent.
    • Must be at least 18 years of age.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel is a plus
    • Prior cash handling and point of sale experience is a plus.
    • Must have strong public speaking skills the ability to read, write and speak the English language (knowledge of other languages is a plus)
    • Must be able to think clearly, react quickly, and calmly to changes and/or emergency situations
    • Previous supervisory experience preferred. Previous guest service or retail experience preferred.
    • Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Successful completion of pre-employment background check.
    • Ability to remain on feet for long periods of time, climb stairs, bend and stoop.
    • Physical strength, including the ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
    • Note: Position will involve exposure to inclement weather, dust, potentially dangerous and unpredictable animal species, and potential dangerous machinery, restraint devices and toxic chemicals and/or drugs. Occasional use of protective clothing or equipment is required e.g. goggles, mask, gloves, and gowns.
