    Default job background
    Description

    Position Description:
Fellowship in Trauma & Health Psychology

We are pleased to announce that we are accepting applications for a unique postdoctoral training experience at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, in partnership with Froedtert Hospital.

The position is a two-year full-time fellowship in Trauma and Health Psychology, starting July 1, 2024, and includes both clinical and research foci.

MCW/Froedtert Hospital is a not-for-profit 650+ bed facility and academic medical center in Milwaukee, WI, that serves individuals across the adult age span.

We are the state's largest adult Level I Trauma Center and home to the only Level I pediatric trauma center in the state accredited by the American College of Surgeons, meaning that the most severely injured patients are treated here.

The goal of the fellowship is to provide trainees with experiential clinical and research training focused on developing advanced competencies in trauma and health psychology.

The program will prepare you for independent research and clinical practice in a medical setting. There are also opportunities to become involved with clinical and research training focused on firearm injury patients.

    Clinical Training:

Clinically, the fellowship is focused on providing inpatient and outpatient treatment to patients requiring emergency surgery following injury (e.g., from motor vehicle collision) or due to critical illness.

The most common patient populations served include those with orthopedic injuries, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, limb amputations, and intra-cavitary injuries, in addition to acute care surgery patients with emergent non-injury medical conditions.

Inpatient work includes brief assessment and intervention and draws upon core clinical health psychology skills. The outpatient clinic provides evidence-based treatment for psychological sequalae of trauma or acute illness. There are extensive opportunities to develop expertise in evidence-based practices for treatment of PTSD. We also commonly treat depression, anxiety, grief, and adjustment difficulties following injury (e.g., amputation). There are also opportunities to become involved in an integrative multidisciplinary clinic for firearm injured patients.

The fellow will be an integral member of a dynamic and passionate multidisciplinary team that includes surgeons, advanced practice providers, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, and physical and occupational therapists.

The trauma psychology service is well-regarded by our interdisciplinary colleagues, which makes this an especially fulfilling department in which to gain postdoctoral experience.

The program includes four supervising faculty psychologists, an intern (as a part of an APA-accredited health psychology residency across Froedtert Hospital/MCW), and graduate students acquiring external training for their doctoral programs.

As a result, the fellow will gain experience in supervising trainees under the supervision of licensed faculty.

    Research Training:

In addition to this robust clinical training, the fellowship also involves protected time for participation in the Milwaukee Trauma Outcomes Project, a research collaborative that includes researchers in health psychology, trauma, clinical and translational neuroscience, trauma surgery, and emergency medicine.[i] Exciting new funding from the Department of Defense (DOD) will support the research time of the fellow to participate in a study to evaluate the efficacy of early intervention to prevention PTSD.

Also, as part of this research group, the fellow will have the opportunity to design and implement their own research project(s).

Beyond these opportunities, the fellow will be expected to contribute to manuscript development with ongoing and completed research projects and to present research findings at local and national conferences.

The fellow will receive financial support for research dissemination and professional development activities.

    Note on Diversity:
We are privileged to serve wonderfully diverse communities and individuals.

This is also a setting where we bear witness to-and actively work to ameliorate-the effects of inequity and social determinants of health.

Issues surrounding culturally responsive treatment, health disparities, and racial and social justice are interwoven throughout this training experience. Applicants with interests related to these topics and applicants from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply.

    Application Instructions:

The application deadline is January 5, 2024, although applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and we encourage applicants to apply soon if interested.

Due to institutional requirements, eligible candidates must be US citizens who have obtained a Ph.
    D. or Psy.
    D. in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA-accredited institution and who have completed an APA-accredited internship.

Interested applicants should submit a letter of interest, current curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation mailed directly from writer, and unofficial graduate transcripts emailed directly from institution to: Holly Hohner at AND Terri deRoon-Cassini, PhD (Director, Trauma & Health Psychology Fellowship Program) at

Prospective applicants are welcome to contact Dr. deRoon-Cassini, Trauma Psychology Program Director, with questions about the fellowship. Interviews will be either virtual or in-person depending upon applicant preference. A research presentation by the applicant will be a part of the interview process. We plan to make an offer around February 15, 2024. The start date is July 1, 2024, but there may be some flexibility in this if needed.
