Description
The Hospital Support Assistant is responsible for various aspects of hospital operations, including housekeeping and animal husbandry tasks.

The Hospital Support Assistant must be able to perform tasks with energy, accuracy, professionalism, flexibility, and a sense of humor.

This position reports to the Director and Animal Care Assistant and will be working with our staff, volunteers, and interns.

A passion for wildlife, conservation, and the environment is essential.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Complete in a timely manner with accuracy: daily housekeeping tasks including dishes, laundry, sweeping, mopping, cleaning and disinfecting housing, restocking supplies, caring for feeder insects.
  • As needed, assist with certain aspects of patient care, including diet preparation, distributing diets to birds in aviaries, housing setup and maintenance, and implementing enrichment plans for our patients.
  • Follow hospital and biosecurity procedures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of humans and animals.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Someone who loves wildlife, can build a rapport with others of all ages and backgrounds, and is flexible, organized, and hardworking.
  • Able to work calmly and efficiently in busy environment while maintaining focus, accuracy, and energy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to add and subtract, multiply and divide. Ability to perform these operations using units of US currency, weight measurement and volume.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age per our state and federal wildlife rehabilitation permits.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work.
  • Maintain current tetanus, covid vaccine and health insurance.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described herein represent essential components of the job of working in a wildlife rehabilitation hospital.

They include but are not limited to the following:

able to lift or move up to 25 lbs., stand for up to 6 hours a day; and kneel, crouch, stoop, crawl and reach to arm's length.

Must have 20/20 vision and possess physical dexterity and coordination to handle small objects and perform intricate tasks.

While performing the tasks listed elsewhere in this document, the incumbent is routinely exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals (bleach and a hydrogen peroxide-based disinfectant); allergens such as pollen, dust, dried fecal matter, and dander; zoonotic diseases; frightened animals; inclement weather conditions; and noise.


SCHEDULE


The schedule for this position begins no later than the first week of June and concludes the last week of July.

This position is part-time, 12-16 hours per week. Shifts are typically 4 hours and begin at 9 am, including weekends and holidays. The schedule is currently Thursday, Friday, and Saturday; and some Mondays.
