JOB DESCRIPTION:


Provides planned and highly skilled nursing care for the immediate pre and postoperative patient through continuous patient surveillance allowing for early recognition of medical or surgical complications which may arise in any patient.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  • Admits patient to pre-op area, assesses patient and prepares patient for surgery
  • Receives patient from surgery and evaluates needs of patient, administering care accordingly. Compares stability of vital signs with pre-op to establish parameters.
  • Assesses and documents patient status.
  • Carries out treatments and/or orders
  • Give postoperative instructions
  • Makes postoperative telephone call
  • Maintains OR logs

SPECIAL SKILLS REQUIRED:


  • Graduate from accredited school of nursing
  • Currently licensed to practice nursing in the state of Connecticut
  • Adequate understanding of ophthalmic operative procedures and expected postoperative course
  • Complete knowledge and understanding of preoperative nursing care in the ambulatory surgery unit
  • Adequate understanding of a wide variety of medical pathophysiology
  • Awareness of symptoms and possible complications of surgery and anesthesia and initial treatment
  • Knowledge should be up to date on the actions of all pharmaceuticals and anesthetic agents
  • Have a working knowledge of fluid and electrolyte balance
  • Able to perform accurate and complete patient assessments throughout the preoperative period
  • Should be competent in technical skills, to include intravenous therapy, CPR, artificial ventilation
  • Monitor the sterile environment
  • Assisting anesthesia, scrub and medical personnel to assure a smooth operation
  • Assisting in the preparation of the sterile environment
  • Assisting in proper preparation of supplies, medication, equipment, and instrumentation involved in patient care
  • Checking OR equipment to include all emergency supplies
