- Performs patient/family genetic risk assessments. Collects and evaluates medical and family histories; obtains and reviews medical records to confirm reported diagnosis; analyzes and interprets information obtained from patient, medical records, and resource materials; evaluates complex medical and genetic literature from varied sources and incorporates into clinical practice.
- Provides information regarding the etiology, inheritance, incidence/carrier risks, and natural history/prognosis for genetic conditions/diseases. Facilities patients understanding of genetic, medical, and psychosocial information including risks, testing options and procedures, test results, and their implications; performs psychosocial assessment during genetic consultations and provides grief and crisis counseling as needed.
- Formulates genetic testing and/or medical recommendations in collaboration with physicians and team members. Facilitates referrals for other family members who seek information and provides medical genetic counseling.
- Implements or facilitates recommendations based upon the patient-family assessment. Coordinates requests for laboratory services, analyzes and interprets clinical/laboratory findings, and conveys results to patients, physicians, and team members. Distinguishes complex laboratory results requiring action and seeks appropriate supervision for representation/participation in action. Provides reassurance and support to the patient/family.
- Evaluates patient-family care. Writes detailed consultation reports conveying complex genetic concepts to patients and referring health care providers. Completes chart notes, records patient interactions, and keeps statistics on outcomes.
- This position involves light work that may exert up to 20 pounds and may consistently require light work involving lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects involving patient care or medical equipment.

The Division of Medical Genetics in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah School of Medicine is seeking a full-time Genetic Counselor to provide comprehensive genetic counseling services for genetic conditions.
Provides information and support to families who have members with birth defects, genetic disorders, or who may be at risk for a variety of inherited conditions.
Identifies, investigates, interprets, and communicates potential risk factors and provides support and counseling to families and patients by referring them to relevant support services.
