- The Department of Behavioral Ecology investigates behavioral interactions between individuals in relation to ecological influences. In particular, the function and mechanism of chemical communication, the impact of skin bacteria on body odor, the function of uropygial gland secretions in birds, behavioral adaptation to humaninduced environmental changes, the causes and consequences of individual variations in the gut microbiome, and niche selection and adaptation to the environment are studied. The species we study are mainly vertebrates such as zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata, Parus major, Cyanistes caeruleus, Charadriidae), salamanders (Salamandra salamandra), or bats.
- Although long unknown, birds are very capable of smelling, and previous studies have shown that, for example, zebra finches, as well as other estrildid finches, can distinguish between related and unrelated conspecifics based on smell. The job holder will address the remaining question in this research project of how much this behavior is influenced by familiarity and/or genetic similarity.
