    Overview


    Student in a twenty-four (24) month course of study to become proficient and capable of performing diagnostic radiographic exams as ordered under the supervision of a radiologist.

    They must have the specific expertise and skills necessary for maintaining a safe radiological environment daily. The student radiologic technologist knows basic anatomy, physiology and physics as it pertains to patient care.

    Responsibilities


    • Provides imaging services and transportation to patients of all ages; including neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric. Provides patients and families with thorough explanations and adequate communication.
    • Practices radiation safety and follows dose reduction practices.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of human structure, function and pathology.
    • Anticipates and provides basic patient care and comfort as well as utilize universal precautions.
    • Upholds all safety standards related to assigned position. Follows the established protocols, practices and guidelines for assigned area of expertise to provide quality service. Observes JCAHO standards.
    • Prioritizes customer and patient satisfaction and utilizes AIDET principles. Works with other departments, modalities and personnel to provide above average care to patients and families.
    • Uses I Care principles to ensure proper patient identification, correct exam, and to improve patient communication and engagement.
    • Practices good stewardship with supplies, equipment and department resources to assist in maintaining the financial viability of the DCH Health System.
    • Correlates clinical history with the exam(s) being performed.
    • Understands, utilizes and takes responsibility for the care, cleaning and maintenance of all imaging, transport and office supplies, equipment and software as required by assigned area.
    • Able to apply principles of body mechanics.
    • Able to interpret x-ray reports as well as perform radiographic exams on all mandatory and selected electives as related in the student handbook.
    • Able to properly escort patients into exam room by transport essential to that patient; to aid the patient onto and off the exam table; and assist the patient while on the table, i.e. turning, etc.
    • Able to position the patient to the midline of the table and center the part correctly to the cassette and select correct factors for routine and emergency exams.
    • Able to adapt or modify patient positioning and selection of technical factors for other than the normal patient; also to include the pediatric and geriatric patients.
    • Able to report malfunctions of equipment to the appropriate supervisor.
    • Able to demonstrate knowledge and skills of quality improvement.
    • Able to recognize emergency patient conditions and initiate first aid and basic life support procedures.
    • Able to send studies, notes, etc. through the use of PACS.

    DCH Standards:

    • Maintains performance, patient and employee satisfaction and financial standards as outlined in the performance evaluation.
    • Performs compliance requirements as outlined in the Employee Handbook. Fulfills education requirements for assigned position including DCH Health System and Imaging required CBT's, in-services, meetings and educational sessions.
    • Must adhere to the DCH Behavioral Standards including creating positive relationships with patients/families, coworkers, colleagues and with self.
    • Requires use of electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software and intranet. Responds timely to all forms of communication
    • Must adhere to all DCH Health System policies and procedures.
    • All other duties as assigned.
    Qualifications


    • Must be a graduate of high school or equivalent with required fifteen (15) hours of college courses.
    • Must be efficient in the use of imaging equipment in the area of expertise, office equipment and related material essential to good patient care, imaging exams and Synapse.
    • Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
