Join our team at the University of Notre Dame as a Fire Lieutenant and be at the forefront of ensuring the safety and well-being of our community As a Fire Lieutenant, you'll play a pivotal role in providing top-tier fire protection, emergency medical services, and fire safety education to the Notre Dame campus and its surrounding areas.


Key Responsibilities:

Emergency Response Leadership: Work closely with Fire Captains in supervising firefighters during their shifts, and take charge as an incident commander during campus emergencies. In the absence of Fire Captains, assume their responsibilities with confidence and competence.

Firefighting and Medical Response: Be ready to spring into action at a moment's notice, responding to medical emergencies, reports of fires, and activated fire alarms across Notre Dame, St. Mary's College, Holy Cross College, and nearby areas. Your swift and decisive actions can make all the difference in critical situations.

Fire Prevention and Education: Conduct thorough inspections of buildings to identify fire code and safety violations, ensuring a secure environment for all. Additionally, engage in testing and inspections of fire alarm systems, perform equipment maintenance, and deliver fire safety education to students, staff, and faculty, fostering a culture of preparedness and awareness.

Critical Staffing: As a Fire Lieutenant, you'll be an integral part of our university's critical staffing, playing a crucial role in maintaining safety and continuity even in challenging circumstances.

Leadership Skills: Ability to provide guidance and direction to firefighting personnel, ensuring efficient and effective emergency response.

Emergency Response Experience: Prior experience in firefighting and emergency medical services is highly desirable, along with proficiency in incident command procedures.

Fire Safety Knowledge: Strong understanding of fire prevention principles, fire codes, and safety regulations, with a commitment to promoting a culture of safety within the community.

Physical Fitness: Must be able to meet the physical demands of firefighting and emergency response activities, maintaining readiness for action at all times.

Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills are essential for conducting inspections, delivering educational programs, and coordinating with diverse stakeholders during emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications:


Education:

High school diploma or GED


Experience:

7 or more years in fire service


Experience/Skills Required:


  • Ability to function as part of a team
  • Can operate with mínimal supervision in highstress and lifethreatening environments
  • Willingness to risk wellbeing to save a life
  • Possession of ability to exercise compassion, patience, and empathy to members of our community in crisis

Supplemental Qualification Required:

(Licenses, Certifications, Registrations)

  • State drivers/operators license
  • Firefighter 1 & 2 (or equivalent) certification
  • Hazardous Materials Operations certification
  • Emergency Medical Technician-Basic certification

Preferred Qualifications:


Degree Required:

(Knowledge)

A.A.S or BA/BS in related field preferred


Additional Certifications Preferred:


  • Confined Space Rescue certification
  • High Angle Rescue certification
  • Trench Rescue certification
  • EMT-Advanced certification
