CAMS is hiring a Control Operator - Third Class to operate equipment at fossil fueled generating stations. This position can advance in class level based on experience and performance in the role. Roseton Generating Station is a 1,200 MW steam to electric power plant. Oil and natural gas are burned to generate 4.2 MMlb/hr. of steam at 2,600 psig and 1050 F. The steam spins a turbine/generator to make electricity. The nature of the process is hazardous if not controlled properly.

It is the Operators job to ensure the safety of this process by detecting and mitigating process upsets and abnormal conditions.


Job Duties:

  • Under direct supervisor operate equipment and auxiliaries from a control center at fossil fueled steam electric generating stations
  • Regulate equipment based on data provided by plant instruments and computers.
  • Monitor meter gauges, recorders, and computer screens.
  • Adjust controls to regulate/control power output of the stations.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose issues within the control center.
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance at the plant as needed.
  • Assist higher level Control Operators as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned include operations and maintenance work not normally performed.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum education of a high school diploma or GED.
  • Relevant technical training, apprenticeship program, or equivalent education or experience; Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of education.
  • Diploma from a recognized trade school in the electrical field.
  • Demonstrated experience with aspects of power plant operations and maintenance including mechanical, instrument and electrical systems and a working knowledge of power cycles.
  • Solid knowledge and experience in calibrating, maintaining and troubleshooting Instrumentation & Control equipment and systems in power plants, industrial facilities, processing plants or Navy environments (minimum of 2 years).
  • Experience in controls or Hid background (pneumatic and electronic valves, transmitters, switches and regulators) area preferred.
  • The ability to lift objects up to fifty pounds is required.
  • Hourly wage starts at $38.15 and increases to $40.49 after six (6) months.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to work weekends and holidays.
  • Exposure to various temperatures and weather conditions.
  • Climbing, working overhead, in confined spaces and operating forklifts.
  • Exposure to loud noise, highvoltage electricity, heat, dust, fumes, and hazardous chemicals
  • Must be able to wear applicable personal protective equipment (PPE) including, but not limited to, a hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and Flame-Retardant Clothing (FRC)
Plant Tech Salary

  • Starting 3C Plt Tech $39.10 after 6 months goes to $41.50
  • After 1 year becomes 2C Plt Tech if they pass test (1 chance to pass) $45.10 then 6 months later $47.6 3 1⁄2 years test for 1C Plt Tech if they pass test (2 chances to pass) $52.66 then 6 months later $55.11

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Basic knowledge of power station operation and mechanics of equipment operation
  • Able to push, pull, turn, and position parts and tools.
  • Able to perform strenuous work while standing or sitting.
  • Able to push, pull, lift and carry objects up to fifty pounds.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC)
  • Previous power plant or boiler experience preferred.
- $36.21 per hour (Step 1) with a wage increase to $37.22 after six months.
