The Office of Community Health Workers (OCHW) within the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) exists to support the Community Health Workers/Representatives (CHW/R) profession and workforce development by leading strategic partnerships and capacity-building initiatives with organizations employing, training, and mentoring or advocating for Community Health Workers (CHWs) statewide.
Why does the job exist?
The position exists through annual legislative appropriations to meet the state mandated statutes: Senate Bill (SB) 58 enacting the Community Health Workers (CHW) Act and NMSA 1978 State-Tribal Collaboration Act.The Office of Community Health Workers seeks to become a statewide convener and is charged with workforce development through integration of Community Health Workers into New Mexico's health and social service care teams and networks. This charge is key in providing a competent workforce through the lens of customer centered use of technology to increase access to trainings, resources, and employment opportunities for Community Health Workers and organizations/providers.
This position will lead, deliver, coordinate, and evaluate training opportunities statewide for Community Health Workers and organizations/providers; support the creation of and provision of educational and training tools in a culturally and linguistically
appropriate manner to support community members of various backgrounds statewide, and recruitment outreach activities and technical assistance to support Community Health Worker state certification and recertification to individuals, communities, and organizations/providers statewide.
How does it get done?
This position is responsible for coordinating, directing, and delivering training opportunities for Community Health Workers and organizations/providers statewide; developing a strategic statewide training and evaluation plan to build capacity of certified Community Health Workers, endorsed training and Continuing Education providers, and Master Trainers in Core Curriculum and Specialty trainings statewide; data collection and reporting of statewide Community Health Worker training needs to support state certification, workforce development, and capacity building initiatives within New Mexico communities and regions, including bordering state, cities, and towns; oversight of Community Health Worker certification processes for application and criminal screening reviews, eligibility determination, data collection/reporting of certification trends, and technical assistance for state Community Health Worker re/certification.Who are the customers?
Individuals, statewide, rural and frontier, and indigenous communities and regions, Community Health Workers, Community Health Workers Affiliate organizations/providers, Federally Qualified Health Care Centers, Hospitals/Clinics, Public Health Offices, Community Based Organizations, Public School Systems, Higher Learning Institutions, Managed Care Organizations, and other health care and social service networks.Ideal Candidate
Preferred experience: Background and/or experience in coordinating assessment of training needs of lay or professional social service and health care workers; development of training curriculum; delivery of training curricula to ensure fidelity; promoting collaborative efforts with stakeholders and organizations/providers; practicing cultural humility; program evaluation, and program certification and/or licensure credentialing. Two years of experience working in the community in areas of community outreach, healthcare or social service settings. Proficiency or fluency in Spanish. Supervisory certification and/or leadership credentialing.Minimum Qualification
A Bachelor's Degree in any field of study from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of heavy supervisory or limited professional level experience operating within strict parameters and guidelines directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment.
