Main Purpose of Job
\rThis position has full responsibility for\rthe group life program during specified shifts, to include planning and\rscheduling work assignments of other employees working directly with youth.\rThis includes first-line supervisors. This position is responsible for\rstandards of performance and continuity of training of assigned personnel and\rwith their adherence to facility and departmental policies. The position is\rassigned a regular shift but may be required to work other shifts, evenings,\rnights, weekends and holidays as required by staffing needs. The incumbent may\rbe subject to call-in based on staffing needs.\r\r

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
Graduation from an\raccredited high school or possession of high school equivalency certificate

\r\r\rExperience:

Four years of experience providing supervision and guidance to\ryouth in a juvenile facility or juvenile services community program for at-risk\ryouth

\r\r\rNotes:

\r1. The education and certification requirements are set by\rthe Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with the\rCorrectional Services Article, Section 8-209, Annotated Code of Maryland.\r\r2. Candidates may substitute possession of an Associate of Arts degree in\rCriminal Justice or the social or behavioral sciences from an accredited\rcollege or university or sixty credit hours from an accredited college or university,\rincluding 15 hours in criminal justice or the social or behavioral sciences for\rone year of the required experience.\r\r3. Candidates may substitute possession of a Bachelor's degree in Criminal\rJustice or the social or behavioral sciences from an accredited college or\runiversity for two years of the required experience.\r\r\r\r\r4.Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces\rmilitary service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Correctional\rOfficer classifications or Correctional Officer specialty codes in the\rMiscellaneous Occupations field of work on a year-for-year basis for the\rrequired experience.\r\r\r\r

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
\rThe ideal candidate will have three years'\rexperience supervising employees in the performance of work in a secure\rjuvenile setting.\r\r
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
\r1.Candidates who have not already\rdone so must complete and successfully pass the Entrance Level Correctional\rTraining Course for DJS staff required for the Maryland Correctional Training\rCommission certificate within 365 days of initial appointment or placement in\rthis classification according to Code of Maryland Regulations \rEmployees are required to maintain certification while employed.\r2. Employees in this classification\rmay be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.\rEmployees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle\roperator's license valid in the State of Maryland.\r3.Employees in this\rclassification that are employed at DJS Youth Centers may be required to\rcomplete a Board approved medication technician training program and possess a\rvalid Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON) certification as a Medication\rTechnician.\r\r

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

In accordance with the Correctional\rServices Article, Section 8-209of theAnnotated Code of\rMaryland,the Maryland Correctional Training Commission shall establish\rthe minimum qualifications for probationary or permanent appointment of a\rDepartment of Juvenile Services employee in a mandated position.

These requirements\rare listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations , general\rregulations of the Maryland Correctional Training Commission, and include:
\r\rU.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status\rMust be at least 21 years of age\rA thorough background check, including\rfingerprinting and drug testing\rAn oral interview, and\rPhysical and psychological examinations.\r\r2. Employees in this classification are subject to\rsubstance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations\r , Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.\r
