We are seeking aHealth Physicist - Radioactive Materials.A Health Physicist 1 is needed in the Bureau of Radiological Health Radioactive Materials program to perform licensing, inspection, and technical support for radioactive materials use and emergency response across Iowa.
After obtaining adequate Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) training and education and completing initial qualifications for radioactive materials inspectors, this individual will inspect and/or investigate facilities that use radioactive material to ascertain the degree of compliance with the appropriate standards, rules and laws.
This individual will also review radioactive materials license applications, prepare licenses and participate in peer/document reviews.The ideal candidate will possess strong technical skills related to radioactive materials and radiation protection and measurement and be able to review technical documents, as well as federal and state regulations pertaining to a wide variety of uses of radioactive material.
Additional technical experience that can support dose assessment and radiation emergency response during nuclear power plant drills and exercises and/or field experience is also preferred to support duties of measuring and evaluating radiological conditions affecting workers, the public, and the environment using radiation detection equipment.
Strong attention to detail as required to ensure proper maintenance and tracking of licensing and inspection actions, completeness of applicant/licensee documentation, and accuracy in tracking licensee information in bureau database.
Must possess strong communication skills to effectively provide technical assistance across a wide variety of radiation protection partners including the general public, professional groups, manufacturer representatives, licensed facility management, and other governmental agencies.
Represents the Iowa Health and Human Services Bureau of Radiological Health at various meetings regarding the Agreement State radioactive materials program or radiation emergency response.
This position requires individuals to satisfactorily complete government sponsored core courses in health physics or other specialized training programs as required by federal agencies within the time frame specified by management.
Travel is required for positions in this class. This position may be located in the Lucas State Office Building in Des Moines, remote, or hybrid. Employees must be willing to travel for extended periods of time.Individuals may assist with other duties as assigned in an emergency or disaster as mutually agreed upon by the employee and employer.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
1) Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in physics, nuclear engineering, health physics, nuclear physics, healthcare administration, another health-related field, or another science.
2) Successful completion of the U.S. Navy Nuclear program.
