Provide services as a Biological Scientist in support of the overall functions of the National Institute on Aging (NIA) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The purpose of this position is to support biological experiments conducted at the Center for Alzheimer's and Related Dementias.

This position will lead studies to organize, manage, and prepare human biological samples for next-generation sequencing, array-based genotyping, and other studies.

The position will also have an administrative role in coordinating with clinical sites providing samples and tracking sample status and information for reporting purposes.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Address questions from sites about laboratory requirements and other labrelated questions.
  • Work collaboratively with other biologists and independently on clinical laboratory studies in genetics, including preparing samples for next generation sequencing and arraybased genotyping

  • Provide reports on project status. Work with administrative/project staff to document project logistics and timelines.
  • Independently performs laboratory equipments to prepare human patient samples for additional studies, including normalizing DNA concentrations, plating samples, measuring concentrations via Qubit, etc

  • Leads coordination of sample reconciliation and serves as point of contact for clinical sites collecting and preparing patient samples

  • Monitor reagents and equipment and place orders and maintenance requests as needed.
  • Thoroughly track sample information in electronic spreadsheets and laboratory notebooks

  • Assist in preparing presentations and manuscripts to both internal staff and external community.
  • Document all experimental protocols in laboratory notebooks for replication and troubleshooting
  • Assists with drafting and testing new methodologies for projects and manuscripts.
  • Troubleshoots equipments and plans new experiments independently and in teams

  • Leads decisionmaking with sites about sample preparation and shipment logistics.
  • Help implement new protocols as needed.
  • Meet with lab members to present updates

Basic Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in biology, genetics, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques and clinical sample management.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite, REDCap, and Outlook.

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Ability to multitask and pay close attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently or in teams.
  • Strong organizational skills in both laboratory and recordkeeping.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
