08JOB DESCRIPTION:


Under direction of the Deputy Director of Ferry Maintenance (DDFM), Shipyard Supervisor and/or Port Marine Engineer, with some latitude for independent judgment, assists with the planning, control and execution of shipyard repairs, dry-dockings and marine engineering projects on municipal ferries, barges and marine vessels operated by the Department of Transportation.

Provide guidance and supervision to OEM representatives, shipyard trades, and or shipyard superintendent. Performs inspection of work performed by shipyard contractors, subcontractors and original equipment manufacturers (OEM). Provide guidance and/or training to ferry maintenance staff on new or modified equipment from shipyard periods.


EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL TASKS:


Assists with research and advice on the preparation of specifications and on projects connected with vessel and/or barge dry-dockings and for conversions or modifications to vessels.

Performs field surveys of assigned projects from inception through completion to monitor progress, including, but not limited to:
research of drawings/technical manuals, classification surveys, regulatory agency compliance and vessel reports. Incorporates required items into specifications. Ensures contractor compliance with project specifications. Prepares final/completion reports for projects.

Assists with planning and scheduling of inspections of vessels and submission of reports and documentation to ensure completion by required due dates.

Monitors and documents dry dockings, projects, and specification submission timelines. Attends weekly production meetings to review and track vessel schedule. Identifies valves to be removed or located for shipyard contractor.

Observes operation of and/or operates all vessel machinery and equipment that has been repaired or tested by American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and US Coast Guard (USCG) inspectors.

Ensures that tested equipment and machinery is returned to full operational status following testing. Attends contract check points for shipyard contract deliverables. Provides guidance to OEM representatives and/or shipyard superintendent on vessel operations. Notifies shipyard superintendent of any deficiencies that are discovered aboard DOT vessels while in the shipyard. Provides regular and daily communication to DOT supervisors, including written daily shipyard reports. Provide guidance and/or training to ferry maintenance staff on new or modified equipment from shipyard periods.


PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Experience in vessel dry-docking procedures and regulations.
  • Expert knowledge of design codes and technical standards; knowledgeable in principals of design as related to the design of marine structures and systems.
  • Well-developed skills in prioritizing, organization, decision making, and time management, and verbal/written communication skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of ABS and USCG rules and regulations.
