    I. JOB OVERVIEW

    Job Description Summary:

    Disability Support Services (DSS) at The George Washington University recognizes disability in the context of diversity. We work collaboratively with students, faculty and staff across the campus to foster a climate of universal academic excellence, while also promoting disability culture and GW's broader diversity and inclusion initiatives.

    The ASL interpreter provides interpreting/transliterating services for deaf and hard of hearing students and other hearing impaired college clientele using manual and oral methods of communication.


    • Effectively, accurately, and impartially conveys the thought, intent, and spirit of a speaker to deaf and hard of hearing individuals.


    • Interprets both receptively and expressively.


    • Assesses individual communication skills in speech, lip-reading, signs, and fingerspelling in order to utilize the most appropriate mode of communication with each individual.


    • Attends the workplace regularly, reports to work punctually and follows a work schedule to keep up with the demands of the worksite. Working hours may include evenings, holidays or weekends depending on the scheduled academic or university related events.


    • Contributes to DSS biannual newsletter.


    • Attends advising sessions, classes, labs, faculty/student conferences, tutoring sessions, group discussions and other authorized college-related activities with deaf and hard of hearing students to interpret.


    • May provide interpreting services for functions outside of the classroom, events such as student orientations, commencements, other campus-wide events and extracurricular activities, etc when requested in advance.


    • Assists with preparation and production of text to ASL translation materials such as websites, surveys, etc.


    • Observes problems encountered in accessing class materials or presentation contents and communicates to appropriate support personnel.


    • Utilizes sign vocabulary adequate to ensure proper interpretation for a variety of discipline-specific jargon related to the field of study presented.


    • Completes all required training and professional development sessions to maintain certification awarded by Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.


    • Maintain professional standards as delineated in the Code of Professional Conduct of the national Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc.

    Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/GED plus 3 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

    Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:

    Current Certificate of Interpretation (CI) from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and/or Current Certificate of Transliteration (CT) from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and/or Current National Interpreter Certification (NIC) from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.

    Preferred Qualifications:


    • Sign language interpreting and transliterating services provided in educational environments.


    • Ability to perform the physical functions of signing for full classroom sessions.


    • Ability to work effectively with others in an educational setting.


    • Ability to work in a fast paced higher education environment with students, staff and faculty.

    • Current Certificate of Interpretation (CI) from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and/or Current Certificate of Transliteration (CT) from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and/or Current National Interpreter Certification (NIC) from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
