    About the position

    The Automation Engineer 1.5 will provide expert technical knowledge of all automated systems within the Heat Treat and Blast & Paint facilities to other engineers, maintenance teams, and operation personnel. Maintain, troubleshoot, improve, and develop control system processes to keep current and future equipment operating in a safe manner while maintaining high utilization and throughput of quality product in a cost-effective manner. Serve as project manager on assigned automation related projects and improvements.

    Main Responsibilities

  • Efficiently maintain departmental automated equipment and computer systems as needed to include preventive maintenance, data backups, data logging, and critical spares inventory.
  • Design, troubleshoot, and maintain Level 0/1 PLC code and HMIs as needed to support departmental needs.
  • Perform Root Cause Failure Analysis on production and quality issues and develop corrective actions.
  • Ensure implementation and adherence of all applicable ISO, OHSA, and company standards.
  • Assist in
  • Work closely with other departmental teams to reduce downtime and improve equipment utilization and drive all assigned continuous improvement projects thru to completion.
  • Planning and organizing of automation jobs for outages, including ordering and maintaining adequate spares parts and equipment.
  • Interacting with vendors and service companies to provide on time and cost-effective maintenance service during outages.
  • Complete all company and departmental safety requirements and recognize/report potential any safety concerns to help ensure a zero-injury safety.

    • Qualifications

    Required:

  • BS or AS technical degree or 3 years equivalent experienceStrong commitment to safetyA high level of written and oral communication skillsA good understanding of maintenance systemsHigh-level computer skillsPLC programming experienceExperience with industrial motor drivesExcellent troubleshooting and electrical skillsThe ability to work overtime as needed to support plant automation systems The ability to work without direct supervisionThe ability to work well with contractors and SSAB maintenance personal on technical problemsIn-depth knowledge of the functions, usage and troubleshooting of controls and instrumentation devices such as RTDs, LVDTs, encoders, tachs, PLC networks, network switches, etc.Strong organizational skills

    • Preferred:

  • Minimum three years of industrial automation experience
  • Heat treating experience – quench & temper, normalize
  • Profibus experience
  • SIEMENS S7 PLC Programming Exp
  • Ethernet Network experience
  • Experience writing the code to automate a process working from a functional description
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems (servo and proportional control)
  • Knowledge of Linux operating system
  • Experience with C and/or C++
  • PID Tuning
  • Industrial Robot Programming
