Job Summary


Energy & Facilities (E&F) operates and manages Harvard's energy supplies, district energy plants, and utility infrastructures on the Cambridge/Allston campuses, as well as 24/7 facilities -related call, alarm monitoring and dispatch center.

E&F provides a broad portfolio of labor-based services, including building maintenance, landscaping and custodial to a large portion of the University, as well as engineering, technical, and sustainability services.

Facilities Maintenance Operations (FMO) is group within Harvard Campus Services that offers building and landscape maintenance, and custodial services to Harvard schools and units on a fee-for-service basis.

All services are provided in strict accordance with customer-determined standards.

As such, FMO operates as an in-house alternative to contractor services and therefore manages by the same principles that guide any successful maintenance services business.


Position Description

  • Installs, modifies, inspects and tests all types of waterbased fire suppression systems and associated equipment.
  • Fabricates, installs, modifies and repairs associated piping systems.
  • Installs and repairs flow control valves, fire pumps and sprinkler devices.
  • Performs all installation, maintenance and inspection in accordance with applicable standards and requirements of the National Fire Protection Association, Life Safety Code (Massachusetts State Building Code) and/or established compliance requirements of the Authority Having Jurisdiction.
  • Interprets and updates mechanical plans, drawings and prints as necessary.
  • Required to assist in the inspection and testing of other fire safety systems including fire alarms, extinguishers, fire escapes, and hydrants.
  • Provides responsive customer support in all phases of building maintenance and operations.
  • Assists and advises customers on fire suppression system solutions and provides followup on progress and status of work.
  • Performs other core skills of the trades and related duties as required.
  • May be assigned to work independently or as part of a multitrade team under the guidance and direction of the Area Supervisor and/or Working Foreperson.
  • Must observe and comply with all standard safety codes and practices and perform work in accordance with recognized trade and University standards.

Basic Qualifications

  • Five years related experience in the installation, operation, troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of all types of waterbased fire suppression systems.
  • Must possess a current State Journeyman or higher Sprinkler license.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

Additional Qualifications:

  • Must be able to perform mathematical calculations required to accurately size and install system components and devices.
  • Must be able to read and interpret detailed plans, specifications, operating manuals and other written materials associated with this trade.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate and interact with peers and customers.

Special Requirements:

  • Must supply a complete set of hand tools.
  • Required to wear/use appropriate safety clothing/equipment at all times.
  • Required to properly wear a uniform and maintain a professional image at all times.

Certificates and Licenses

  • Must possess a current State Journeyman or higher Sprinkler license.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift up a minimum of 50 lbs. and transport piping and equipment in excess of 200 lbs. with others.
  • May use chain falls and come alongs for heavier lifting.
  • Must be able to push and pull heavy loads as listed.
  • Must be able to stoop and bend for long periods of time and work on hands and knees and other awkward positions for extended periods, routinely walk to and from various buildings carrying tools, equipment and other essentials to the job site.
  • Must be able to work alone and climb multiple sets of stairs, work of ladders, staging, lifts, etc.

  • This position is based primarily oncampus, in Massachusetts. This may include inperson during emergency situations (if applicable).
