General Statement of Duties

Performs complex chemical laboratory testing and analysis; does related work as required.


Essential Duties


The Chemist helps maintain the day-to-day function of the Henrico County Central Environmental Laboratory, a VELAP certified laboratory located at the Henrico Water Reclamation Facility.


The essential duties of this position include:

  • Extensive knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of chemistry and microbiology applicable to laboratory duties assigned and necessary to maintain State certification.
  • Extensive knowledge of the operation and maintenance of equipment used in a water quality laboratory.
  • Prepares or assists with preparing and maintaining documentation required to satisfy permit and State testing and procedural requirements.
  • Accurately calibrates, maintains, and operates the full array of laboratory equipment.
  • Assists with managing the laboratory's inventory of chemicals, supplies, and equipment.
  • Ability to analyze, evaluate and make recommendations concerning laboratory tests.
  • Ability to prepare moderately complex reports.
  • Ability to effectively supervise and train subordinate laboratory personnel.

The Chemist should have the following abilities:

  • Sound attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Time management skills to successfully complete assigned tasks accurately and in a timely manner within established deadlines, specifications, and regulations.
  • Personal accountability and integrity.
  • Ability to read, and accurately comprehend, interpret, apply, and communicate findings.
  • Sound judgement, critical thinking, and problemsolving skills with the ability to appropriately recognize issues and collaborate effectively with Lab Management and Plant Management to appropriately resolve questions and issues.
  • A sound working knowledge of relevant safety rules/regulations and accidentprevention practices.
  • Manual dexterity, visual and hearing acuity sufficient to enable sample collections and accurate testing, analysis, and reporting and to work safely in laboratory conditions handling hazardous materials.
  • Sound interpersonal skills, including good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with diverse audiences of internal and external personnel and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively to establish and maintain good working relationships with relevant internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Sound math skills necessary to perform accurate calculations.

Minimum Qualifications


Possession of a four (4) year bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or other relevant field; and four (4) years of experience in a certified laboratory, preferably including some supervisory experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.


Additional Information

This position reports to Henrico Water Reclamation Facility in Varina, located at 9101 WRVA Road in Varina.


A criminal history record check and fingerprinting is conducted on all persons conditionally offered employment, including a conditional offer of initial employment, or a conditional offer to promote, demote, or laterally transfer an employee.

Successful completion of NIMS ICS 700. Additional NIMS ICS training courses may be required.
