- As part of a team, utilize established training resources to develop, design, schedule, and present training classes for those preparing for operator certification and for current wastewater and drinking water plant operators. The courses are intended to provide sufficient technical information to prepare individuals for taking certification exams and to provide continuing education on various topics encountered in the industry, including wastewater and drinking water treatment systems. Courses are developed for groups of 6-30 wastewater operators and must be consistent with state and federal programs.
- Give informative presentations to public or professional groups, like city councils and water system boards. Answer questions about water systems and their operations. Speak to school groups about careers in Environmental Science and the water industry.
- Conduct orientation and on-the-job training of inspection team members regarding wastewater collection and treatment theory and processes of treatment plant operation and control.
- Assist with or conduct investigations of citizen environmental concerns.
- As part of a team of inspectors, perform independent inspections of local regulated facilities to help ensure compliance with state regulations.
- Review, monitor, and evaluate operator training materials provided by outside trainers.
- Provide technical and regulatory assistance to department team members, consulting firms, professional operators, and other wastewater and drinking water officials.
- Prior teaching or training experience preferred but not required. If no experience in providing instruction, a strong desire to become a trainer and learn will also be considered.
- Skills and willingness to be able to provide instruction in a variety of classroom or virtual settings and to organize and maintain exam materials.
- Possession of or ability to obtain a current Missouri certificate (class A, B, or C) of competency for wastewater treatment or drinking water treatment. (Individuals with water or wastewater operator certification from another state are encouraged to apply if the certificate is active and in good standing, and it was achieved by successfully passing the examination in that state. Missouri certification may be possible through reciprocity for states with comparable certification requirements.)
- Self-motivated and able to perform field activities without assistance or support, commitment to customer service.
- Experience in environmental work, management, experience and/or formal education in drinking water or wastewater; environmental testing of various media, environmental inspections work, training of team members, and emergency management.
- Familiarity and skill with Microsoft Office Suite programs, including PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.
- Excellent interpersonal, writing, and communication skills.
- A valid vehicle operator's license is required.
- Either a bachelor's degree in environmental science or a related field. (Additional education or experience may substitute for the required education or experience)
- Or a high school diploma or equivalency and 4 years of relevant experience in actual plant operations and maintenance. Two years must be at a system classified by the Department as a level A, B, or C or equivalent.
- The successful candidate will have a training plan established to support the work they will do in this position. This will include operator certification training to obtain a first-level certification, if they are not already certified in either drinking water or wastewater.
