    Summary This position is located at Bureau of Engraving and Printing, within the Facilities Division WCF.

    As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for identifying new approaches and resolving problems that affect construction, renovation, and major repair of mechanical systems.


    Responsibilities As a Mechanical Engineer, you will:

    Perform a wide range of mechanical engineering projects for complex construction, renovation and maintenance projects, such as overseeing major renovation projects on complex machinery whilst maintaining strict air quality, humidity, and temperature standards.

    Work extensively with engineers/project managers and other bureau personnel to include the Office of Acquisition to ensure the procurement and installation of bureau mechanical power systems.

    Develop methods, procedures, and specifications to be used for highly complex and unique mechanical systems, including but not limited to power monitoring (SCADA), direct digital control, building management system (BMS), chilled water, cooling towers, compressed air, vacuum, pneumatic conveyance systems, bag houses, air handlers, chilled water piping, plumbing, steam and boilers - many of which are sensitive and delicate systems that require close monitoring and are essential to the safety, productivity, and functions of the plant.

    Establish standards for new or unusual projects.

    Perform engineering analyses to ensure the most efficient/economical utility delivery (component-systems), evaluates options, and advise management as to appropriate course of action.

    Requirements:
    The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.

    National SUITABILITY, CLEARANCE & REQUIREMENTS:
    A background investigation will be required for all new hires. Appointment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for disqualification in the hiring process. The background investigation process conducted by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing is very thorough.

    Therefore, it is imperative that applicants exercise candor and honesty when answering background questionnaires, especially as it relates to arrest, employment, education, finances, illegal drug use, and/or other criminal history.

    Falsification discovered in security documents or during the background investigation process may result in an immediate negative suitability determination or immediate revocation of your interim clearance (if applicable).

    Qualifications You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

    For the GS-12, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service.


    Specialized experience for this position includes experience:

    Ensuring deliverable products are consistent with engineering specifications and customer requirements; AND Monitoring, troubleshooting, and recommending improvements for major utility systems such as: water, gas, air, vacuum, waste, (HVAC (Chilled water/steam/air handlers), Building Envelope (Doors/Windows/Roof) and Various Interior Systems.

    In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable: For the GS-12, you must have been at the GS-11 level for 52 weeks.


    Education Individual Occupation Requirements for Professional Engineering Positions:
    A


    Degree:
    Engineering.

    To be acceptable, the program must:
    (1) lead to a bachelors degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. OR B. Combination of education and experience college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.

    The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following: 1. Professional registration or licensure
    • Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT)1, or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico.
    Absent other means of qualifying under this standard, those applicants who achieved such registration by means other than written test (e.g., State grandfather or eminence provisions) are eligible only for positions that are within or closely related to the specialty field of their registration.

    For example, an applicant who attains registration through a State Board's eminence provision as a manufacturing engineer typically would be rated eligible only for manufacturing engineering positions.

    2. Written Test
    • Evidence of having successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE)2 examination or any other written test required for professional registration by an engineering licensure board in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico.
    3. Specified academic courses
    • Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and that included the courses specified in the basic requirements under paragraph A.
    The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of an engineering program as described in paragraph A. 4. Related curriculum
    • Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field, e.
    g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a Bachelor's degree in engineering, provided the applicant has had at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance.

    Ordinarily there should be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering-type experience, e.g., in interdisciplinary positions.

    (The above examples of related curricula are not all-inclusive.) The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S.

    Additional Information OTHER INFORMATION:
    We may select from this announcement or any other source to fill one or more vacancies. This is a non-bargaining unit position. The facility typically shuts down annually between Christmas and New Year's Day. As such, all BEP employees must take leave for workdays during the shutdown period.
