    Summary

    What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

    This is a term appointment not to exceed 13 months with possible extensions up to a total of 10 years without further competition. Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status in the Federal service.

    Duties

    As a Geologist within the Office of the Associate Director for Energy and Minerals Resources, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Works with data sets from varied sources, including data published by various State, Federal, and International entities.
  • Utilizes and is proficient in data interpretation software and various PC-based software applications in order to adequately evaluate geologic-related projects, make determinations, and for the purpose of inputting, displaying, and organizing geological, geophysical and/or engineering data for retrieval and evaluation.
  • Prepares detailed technical exhibits, presentation, and reports of geological findings.
  • Prepares or contributes to complex, technically authoritative reports on geologic and related studies, which may require development of new methods of field, remote sensing and/or laboratory investigation and that convey complex geologic, geomorphic, and/or geochemical, information for audiences which may include academic researchers, government entities, commercial concerns, cooperating entities, or other users of government data and reports.
  • Communicates findings in a variety of formats and settings.
  • Makes oral presentations of technical documentation at professional meetings, coordination meetings, design briefings, or other technical briefings, in some cases in support of enforcement activities as part of federal oversight of regulatory programs.
  • Provides guidance and expert advice to management and other officials on technical, systems, or process related topics.
  • Make presentations to senior management officials, in public forums, and under other circumstances where technical information must be presented in a way that is comprehensible to non-technical personnel where the topics communicated are technically oriented, to the Bureau, DOI, cooperating agencies, Federal contractors, or the general public and commercial concerns.
  • Prepares, or oversees the preparation of, and reviews technical documentation such as technical memoranda and reports, study analyses and results, correspondence.
  • Makes oral presentations of technical documentation at coordination meetings and other technical briefings.
  • Serves as an advisor to management on planning of future projects in accordance with DOI priorities and bureau resources and priorities.
  • Participates on and/or leads technical work groups or teams providing technical organizational representation and collaboration on teams external to the organization, including external stakeholders and partners.

  • Qualifications

    BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT : Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geologist, all grade levels.

    A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in geology. In addition to the geology course work included in the degree, it must also have included or been supplemented by 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

    B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in geology plus 20 additional semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.

    For GS-12:

    In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in geology that is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service.

    Examples of such experience could include planning and executing complex geologic studies, including leveraging technical experience in geology to develop and oversee comprehensive web content, stories, images, and data visualizations for large priority science projects; communicating findings from geological studies in a variety of formats and settings; reviewing a breadth of program and science documentation for consistency in messaging; and developing university relationships for technical programs. At this level, Geologists have a very good knowledge of the principles of geology and their application, and the ability to independently perform scientific work of considerable difficulty.

  • Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
