    Duties

    As a(n) Interdisciplinary Supervisory Hydrologist/Chemist/Geologist/Ecologist 1315/1320/1350/0408 within the California Water Science Center (CAWSC), some of your specific duties will include:

  • Serves as a core member of the Center's leadership and management teams.
  • Supervises and manages a staff of approximately 200 professional scientists, technicians, and support personnel.
  • Leads and oversees development, review, and management of the CAWSC Projects Program activities.
  • Coordinates cross-cutting activities among Projects Program groups and between the Projects Program and other CAWSC and USGS programs, centers, and teams.
  • Meets with external partners and determines their science needs and appropriate scopes of work, staffing, funding, deadlines, and technical requirements to meet these needs.
  • Serves as a principal advisor to the Center Director and technical consultant and advisor to the Regional Director and partner agencies on issues relating to water resources in California and the nation.
  • Represents USGS/CAWSC interests as an authority on complex hydrologic problems with government and non-government organizations and the public.

  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment.   • Qualifications

    Ecologist GS-0408 BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT : Applicants must meet A below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Ecologist, all grade levels.

    A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours or the equivalent in ecology, and 12 semester hours or the equivalent in physical and mathematical sciences.

    Hydrologist GS-1315 BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT : Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Hydrologist, all grade levels.

    A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics. **OR**

    B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above which must include at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.     Chemist GS-1320 BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT : Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Chemist, all grade levels.

    A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics. **OR**

    B. A combination of education and experience-course work equivalent to a major as shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering), including at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent of physics, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.     Geologist GS-1350 BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT : Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geologist, all grade levels.

    A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in geology. In addition to the geology course work included in the degree, it must also have included or been supplemented by 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography. **OR**

    B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in geology plus 20 additional semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.     For GS-14: In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in either hydrology, ecology, chemistry, geology, or related disciplines that is equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service.

    Examples of such experience could include serving as a senior expert involved in scientific work for which technical problem definitions, methods and/or data were highly incomplete, controversial, or uncertain. Whose evaluations and recommendations were accepted by others as those of a technical expert. At this level, scientists typically represent an authoritative source of consultation for other scientists and program specialists, are called upon to resolve issues that significantly affect scientific programs, make long range and controversial proposals and defend their findings and recommendations in public or high-level forums.
