Minimum Qualifications

Laboratory Specialist Trainee 1, G-NS:

A bachelor's or higher degree in bacteriology, biochemistry, biological science, biology, chemical science, chemistry, environmental biology, environmental science, environmental studies, environmental toxicology, genetics, medical technology, microbiology, molecular biology, or natural science.


Laboratory Specialist Trainee 2, G-NS:

A bachelor's or higher degree in bacteriology, biochemistry, biological science, biology, chemical science, chemistry, environmental biology, environmental science, environmental studies, environmental toxicology, genetics, medical technology, microbiology, molecular biology, or natural science AND one year of experience using a variety of laboratory techniques and equipment; coordinating laboratory testing and research activities; and/or directing specialized laboratory programs.

A master's degree in a related field can substitute for one year of experience; and a doctorate in a related field can substitute for two years of experience.


Laboratory Specialist 1, G18:

A bachelor's or higher degree in bacteriology, biochemistry, biological science, biology, chemical science, chemistry, environmental biology, environmental science, environmental studies, environmental toxicology, genetics, medical technology, microbiology, molecular biology, or natural science AND two years of experience using a variety of laboratory techniques and equipment; coordinating laboratory testing and research activities; and/or directing specialized laboratory programs.

A master's degree in a related field can substitute for one year of experience; and a doctorate in a related field can substitute for two years of experience.


Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in clinical testing and data analysis. Strong written and verbal communication skills that demonstrate the ability to analyze data and prepare data summaries.


Duties Description
The Laboratory Specialist 1 will perform duties required for the isolation, characterization, and identification of mycobacterial organisms. Position responsibilities include clinical testing, data analysis, reporting and presentation of findings, and training students and other staff.

Most of the work will be performed in a Biosafety Level 3 laboratory, after thorough training by Mycobacteriology staff members and the Safety Office.

Additional duties include culture-based susceptibility testing for drugs used in the treatment of tuberculosis and other mycobacterial infections.
