    Job Summary

    The Medical Laboratory Assistant is responsible for up-front specimen handling and facilitating the workflow in and out of the laboratory. Assists laboratory personnel with laboratory procedures. May perform some moderate complex tests and support clerical duties. Relies on establish guidelines to accomplish tasks. Works under close supervision

    Job Requirements

    High School Diploma or equivalent

    Comfortable working with multiple computer applications.

    Must obtain Louisiana License as Medical Lab Assistant by LSBME within one (1) year of employment.

    Job Functions
    1. Productivity
      1. Independently coordinates, plans, and utilizes time efficiently to prioritize and organize duties/workload.
      2. Maintains inventory supply in work area to ensure efficient departmental operations, minizing duplication of energy and service.
      3. Demonstrates initiative in change adaptation, especially those not covered by written or verbal instructions.
      4. Ability to perform non complex laboratory testing.
      5. Assists in care and maintenance of laboratory work areas and equipment.
      6. Responsible for all pre analytical specimen handling and facilitating workflow in and out of laboratory.
    2. Quality
      1. Understands specimen requirements for each test and evaluates specimen for proper identification and integrity through visual checks and result evaluation
      2. Responsible for ensuring proper specimen identification and the ability to recognize discrepancy. Includes troubleshooting and documentation.
      3. Follows protocol for instrument maintenance, running controls and accepting, verifying and recording q.c. results.
      4. Recognizes and refers problems and questions outside of own expertise to appropriate supervisory personnel.
    3. Compliance
      1. Adheres to safety and infection control policies and procedures.
      2. Complies with regulatory standards applicable to area(s) of responsibility.
      3. Complies with organizational/departmental policies and procedures including, but not limited to, confidentiality, safety, cooperation, flexibility and attendance.
      4. Contributes to performance improvement activities of areas of responsibility.
      5. Complies with mandatory regulatory and credentialing requirements.
      6. Assists in developing and maintaining policies and procedures in compliance with regulatory agencies.
    4. Team work / Customer Service
      1. Interacts with coworkers in a way that promotes a harmonious and cooperative work environment.
      2. Interacts with clients, patients, physicians and other hospital personnel to maintain good customer relations and quality health care.
      3. Assists other areas when own workload allows or when a customer service need arises.
      4. Effectively communicates pertinent information to ensure continuity of care.
    5. Other duties as assigned
      1. Acts as a mentor in the training of students and new employees while fostering interest and knowledge.
      2. Assumes responsibility of departmental operations in absence of supervisor.
      3. Serves as an ambassador for the department and health system.
      4. Demonstrates the Mission and acts in ways that advance the best interest of the customers entrusted to our care.
      5. Demonstrates pride in the professionalism of his/her personal appearance and that of our facility.
      6. Recognizes effective communication by listening attentively to customers and addressing concerns.
      7. Respects the privacy and confidentiality needs of each customer.
      8. Demonstrates selflessness by supporting and cooperating within department and within the organization.
