    Position Summary

    The new Communications Manager and Deputy Spokesperson will manage information, public relations, and marketing activities for the Michigan State University Department of Police and Public Safety in order to inform the public and the University. This position will report to the Director of Strategic Communications and Spokesperson.

    DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Plans new strategies, campaigns and directs public relations efforts for the Michigan State University Department of Police and Public Safety and advises other units on media and public relation issues.
    • Implement project plans and timelines, and coordination of activities such as web enhancements, promotional emails, online ads, web and social media content, and videos.
    • Develops promotion and marketing/news plans for the unit.
    • Assists with web page design, maintenance, and content management.
    • Monitors social media and engages with external audiences in electronic forums.
    • Plans, creates, produces, photographs, edits, records or drafts releases and feature materials for media and publications in order to inform the public and University of issues and events.
    • Oversees internal monthly department newsletter.
    • Assists in overseeing designated student employees and/or interns.
    • Composes, reviews, edits, produces, and duplicates audio, visual, video, and/or printed program materials for distribution to target audiences.
    • Develops visual content for department marketing initiatives (photos, videos, graphics, etc.)
    • Serves as deputy spokesperson for media interviews (video and print).
    COMMUNICATIONS - INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS

    Interacts with:
    • Media Representatives - in order to suggest news and feature stories and answer inquiries.
    • Artists/Photographers/Vendors/Program Leaders - in order to coordinate production of publication materials.
    • Faculty/Staff/Specialists - in order to exchange information and use as sources for news and publication stories.
    • Supervisor - in order to seek advice and approval and receive direction.
    Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

    Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Journalism, Telecommunications, or Public Relations; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in public and media relations, composing, editing and publication production, news, broadcasting, and print media, and/or marketing, advertising, and creative services; graphic design; word processing; desktop publishing; web design; presentation; spreadsheet and/or database software; public presentation; or radio production; or computer programming/technology; experience managing content for social media channels; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
