About the Department

The Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics, within the Physical Sciences Division, offers undergraduate (B.A., B.S.) and graduate (Ph.
D.) degrees in Astrophysics, with a program for non-STEM undergraduates leading to a Minor in Astronomy and Astrophysics. The department has 32 teaching faculty, in addition to emeriti and research faculty.

Job Summary


Responsibilities:


  • Maintain and operate the metamaterials laboratory.
  • Manufacture metamaterial optical elements.
  • Assist with the assembly of optical systems.
  • Streamline production efficiency.
  • Assists with the installation, sets up and performs experiments in a team environment.
  • Provides routine or standardized laboratory duties by collecting data in support of research projects under direct supervision.
  • Collects and enters data. Assists in analysis of data and with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.
  • Performs other related work as needed.
Minimum Qualifications


Education:


Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).


  • Work Experience:
Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through < 2 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Education:


  • High school diploma or GED.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Willingness to learn Python to be able to work with existing code.
  • Ability to work with FNAL support staff to maintain the production system which includes air compressors, a water filtration system, and the CNC dicing saws.


Working Conditions- Lift up to 40 pounds.- Climb stairs and ladders and stand for up to 4 hours per day.- Willingness to work occasional overtime on short notice in response to operational and emergency requirements.- Legally operate cars and light trucks.
