    Description
    This is a temporary non-union non-civil service position not to exceed 866 work hours in a calendar year.


    Minimum Class Requirements:
    Must be at least 16 years of age. Experience working with youth and/or knowledge of sports, crafts, dance, and other recreation activities is preferred. Creativity and flexibly is a plus. Must pass background investigation related to applicant's aptitude, character, judgement, and criminal history.


    Licenses, Registration & Certificates:
    Valid Washington State Driver's License is preferred.


    Under the general supervision and direction of the Recreation Supervisor, this position is responsible for operating after school and summer youth childcare programs.

    Oversees, manages and coordinates activities for numerous youth (ages 5-12) in a fast-paced environment.

    Assists Recreation Supervisor and/or Recreation Leader to implement games, arts and crafts for after-school and summer youth childcare programs.

    Observes activities to ensure the protection and safety of all participants.

    Provides a positive and authoritative approach to guiding behavior using age appropriate limits and choices.

    Encourages children to take responsibility for their role in the group. Encourages cooperation and coordination of efforts and efficient use of resources. Practices safe work habits and contributes to the safety of self, co-workers, children and the general public.

    Works cooperatively and jointly with other staff members and members of the public to provide excellent customer service.

    Performs set up and clean up duties, assist with lunch/snack distribution and other tasks to ensure quality programs.

    Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Requires regular and reliable attendance.

    Knowledge of applicable state and city laws and ordinances, and City of Yakima policies and procedures.

    Demonstrates professional behavior and positive communication through words and actions.

    Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively, with employees and members of the public representing diverse education and background, utilizing well developed communication skills, both written and oral, with appropriate use of English, including but not limited to correct grammar and vocabulary.

    Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding medical, family dynamic or other personal information.

    Knowledge of organization and rules of cooperative and traditional games. Ability to supervise, manage and interact with numerous youth in a fast-paced environment. Must be able to give oral instructions to large groups of youth. Ability to follow schedules, meet deadlines, and organize, prioritize and manage time. Ability and willingness to organize, instruct and participate in recreational events and activities.


    Must possess ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities and demands; positively set limits and boundaries; effectively enforce and reinforce appropriate behavior, and effectively deal with disciplinary issues following established policies and procedures.


    Ability to establish, facilitate, and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public; to consistently and continually demonstrate tact, diplomacy, and respect to individuals, groups and organizations representing a wide diversity of ethnicities, cultures, opinions, and beliefs; Ability to positively receive feedback and take direction is essential.


    Physical Demands:
    Work may be performed in a classroom, gymnasium or outside. Work involves using hands to handle, feel or operate objects, or controls and reaching with hands and arms. Frequent running, walking, standing or sitting for excessive periods, occasionally on rough terrains. Frequent bending/stooping/kneeling. Occasional heavy work includes lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds. On rare occasions may be required to lift heavier weight with the assistance of others or mechanical devices. Occasionally ascends/descends stairs while maintaining balance.

    May work outside with all weather extremes, be exposed to members of the public, animals, insects, pollen, dust, dirt, water, needles, drug paraphernalia, rough terrain and other weather conditions.

    Work may include operation of vehicle and/or light equipment.

    Constant use of all senses including feeling/talking/hearing/seeing while performing duties and while communicating with co-workers, general public and completing all tasks as assigned.

    May work alone, with others, or in remote locations. Will be required to wear safety protective gear when necessary. Must be able to distinguish color and maintain long-term and short-term memory. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions.


    Unusual Working Conditions:
    May work with angry, irate or upset customers or members of the public. Work both indoors and outdoors, engaging in and leading both active and passive activities. Responsible for dressing appropriately for the weather conditions, especially for the hotter summer months and the colder winter months. May work extended hours in the sun with limited shade.
