    SUMMARY: The Public Works Technician is responsible for assisting in all facets of building and grounds maintenance for the Prairie Island Indian Community as directed by the Public Works Manager including care and maintenance of a buffalo herd and maintenance of tribal roads.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

    The following duties and responsibilities are not meant to be all inclusive and may be adjusted to meet business needs.

    • Maintain the grounds around the Prairie Island Community Center, Administration Building and PSB Building including cutting grass, pulling weeds, picking up waste and trash, emptying trash barrels, etc.
    • Provide janitorial services in the Community Center, Administration Building, Elders Building and PSB Building including washing, stripping and waxing floors, washing and sanitizing all bathrooms, vacuuming and shampooing carpets and washing and painting walls as necessary. Also, clean offices, including dusting and emptying waste receptacles.
    • Provide janitorial service in the Medical Center facility, including the proper disposal of all medical waste as required by environmental and health regulations
    • Wash windows on a monthly basis, or more often as necessary
    • Monitor boiler systems as requested
    • Provide general assistance for department managers as requested and as time allows (moving furniture, etc.)
    • Deliver and pick up mail on a daily basis between buildings
    • Feed, water buffalo and other heavy farm work
    • Maintain roads and parks areas including mowing, snow plowing, sanding and minor repairs to roads
    • Other duties as assigned

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Required

    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Good people and organizational skills
    • Strong mechanical skills
    • Good written and verbal communication skills
    • Basic computer skills Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)
    • Ability to work varied hours when necessary
    • Ability to work independently and effectively with minimal supervision
    • Ability to work well within the existing team and government structure
    • Sensitive to Native American Culture
    • Must pass drug screen (UA) and a criminal background check
    • Valid driver's license and proof of insurability

    Preferred

    • Commercial Driver's license (CDL)

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:*

    • Must have the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
    • Must have ability to operate farm equipment, tools, plows, and trucks
    • Must be physically fit to do heavy type farm work.
    • Must be able to walk, stand or sit for long periods throughout the day
    • Must be able to push, pull and grasp objects routinely
    • Must be able to bend and crouch frequently
    • Ability to work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions

    REQUIRED TRAINING:

    • Effectively Handling Harassment training
    • Any position-related training as determined by department manager

    WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

    • Work is performed property-wide (indoors and outdoors) and may include excessive noise, such as power tools, dust and fumes from paints, varnishes, stains and the like and exposure to extreme weather conditions
