Job Description Summary:


  • The Parks Worker I position performs routine maintenance tasks at the City's parks and sports facilities. This is accomplished by performing maintenance duties such as mowing, landscaping, irrigation, cleaning, and general upkeep. This position may require participation on a rotation schedule for On-Call After-Hours support, which includes evenings, holidays, and weekends. Other duties may include completing related tasks as assigned.


This position requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines used in landscaping.

This position requires a valid driver's license.

EXAMINATION PROCESS


Only a limited number of the most highly qualified applicants meeting the City's requirements will be invited for an interview.

The examination process for this position will include a panel Interview and may include a written assessment.


Essential Functions:


  • This information is intended to be descriptive of the key responsibilities of the position. The following functions do not identify all duties performed by the incumbent. Other duties and responsibilities will be performed as assigned._
  • Performs clean up duties by cleaning ramadas, playgrounds, patios and sidewalks; cleaning offices, recreation rooms, restrooms and locker rooms. Power washes graffiti on block walls and other areas including rightsofway and retention areas.
  • Performs landscape maintenance duties by digging trenches and holes, planting, irrigating, cultivating, fertilizing, weeding, trimming and pruning; picking up leaves and litter, installing sod and performing irrigation renovation; installing and removing trash receptacles, picnic tables, benches and signs.
  • Maintains landscaping by mowing, line trimming, picking up debris, aerating, scalping and seeding turf, planting, trimming and removal of plant material. Sprays pesticides in parks and ROW; and removes downed trees in parks and ROW.

Requirements:

Formal Education/Knowledge:Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines. Level of knowledge is equivalent to less than high school or equivalency.

Experience:No experience required.

Certifications and Other Requirements:Valid Driver's License

Reading:Work requires the ability to read irrigation manuals, training guides, standard operating procedures and MSDS manuals.

Math:Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Writing:This position requires the ability to complete work orders and general correspondence.

Managerial:Job has no responsibility for the direction or supervision of others but may provide advice/direction to an employee with less experience/skill or tenure.

  • The employee normally performs the duty assignment after receiving detailed instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results with little room for deviation. The immediate supervisor may, at times, provide close and constant review.

  • Work requires the use of standard technical skills appropriate to the work environment of the organization. Limited analysis and independent thinking is utilized.

  • Work requires regular interaction involving exchange and receipt of information. The purpose of interactions is primarily the sharing of information.

12 Month Objectives:


  • Learn and adhere to City policies and safety procedures in accordance with the City guidelines, training and orientation for tools, equipment and vehicles
  • Become knowledgeable in the operation and maintenance of irrigation maintenance systems in your assigned areas. To be proven by passing a field test administered by the Parks Foreman.
  • Complete training on operation of mowers and equipment. Learn how to operate all equipment safely and efficiently to reduce risk of injury to the operator, other staff and park patrons in accordance with the standard operating procedures
  • Adapt to a changing work schedule that may include working overtime and on weekends when necessary.
  • Actively participates in the Parks Safety Program. Attend all safety meetings in the first year.
