Reporting to the Vice President of Student Life, the AVP/Dean of Students provides leadership, vision, and administrative supervision for the Division of Student Life in the areas of student wellbeing, belonging, and inclusion.

The AVP/Dean serves as an advocate for student well-being, belonging, and success across campus through direct oversight of specific functional areas and through strategic and collaborative partnerships in support of student success and retention.

The AVP/Dean of Students assists the Vice President and divisional leadership team in ongoing efforts to align the growth and development of the division with the College's strategic plan and ensure continuous improvement, assessment, and attention to student well-being and belonging.

The AVP/Dean of Students represents the Vice President in the absence of the Vice President.


AVP/Dean of Students provides direct oversight for functional areas that support student wellness (Counseling & Psychological Services, Student Health Center, Campus Assault, Response and Education [CARE], and wellness outreach and education); belonging (Office of Community Life including non-clinical case management and outreach, essential needs, student conduct, and commuter student support) and inclusion (Center for Women and Gender Equity and the Intercultural Center); The AVP/Dean of Students also leads divisional efforts in addressing risk and crisis management including serving as chair of ORBIT (Outreach, Referral, and Behavioral Intervention Team).

The Division of Student Life intersects at multiple points of a student's journey at Saint Mary's.

With areas that promote students' living experiences, wellness, and engagement, Student Life accompanies students on their academic and co-curricular journey at Saint Mary's.

The Division of Student Life creates a sense of belonging, offers participatory opportunities, and encourages students to contribute back their talents.

Departments within Student Life include Campus Assault, Response, and Education (CARE), Campus Housing, Club Sports, Community Life, Center for Women & Gender Equity, Counseling and Psychological Services, the Dean of Students, Intercultural Center, New Student & Family Programs, Public Safety & Transportation, Residential Experience, Recreational Sports, Student Involvement and Leadership, and the Student Health Center.


Leadership & Supervision:
Provide administrative supervision for the areas that support student

wellness, Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS), Student Health

Center, Campus Assault, Response and Education (CARE) and wellness

outreach and education, working closely with department leads to align

departments with College's strategic plan. Ensure ongoing attention to

education, programming and compliance in regards to alcohol and other

drugs (AOD). Actively explore and sustain partnerships in support of

student wellness, including campus recreation, virtual care opportunities,

and the curricular development of a health services program.

Provide supervision and direction for the office of Community Life,

including student conduct, non-clinical case management and outreach,

essential needs, and commuter support. Ensures proactive cultivation of

community and belonging in collaboration with partners in the Division of

Student Life. Serve as lead for Outreach, Referral, Behavior Intervention

Team (ORBIT) and Bias Incident Response Team (BIRT). In partnership

with staff, regularly review and engage in best practices related to student

centered and equity minded support as well as compliance with federal and

state regulations. Delegated responsibility for annual review and update of

the Saint Mary's Student Handbook (including review and updates to the

student code of conduct and judicial processes, and communication and

collaboration with other departments regarding relevant department and

college policies) as well as annual notification to students.

Provide oversight and supervision for the Intercultural Center and the

Center for Women and Gender Equity, cultivating and sustaining the

promotion of student inclusion and belonging as well as strategic

partnerships and collaboration across campus. Working with department

directors to align with the college's strategic goals and with divisional

commitments to resources and programming that support a student

experience that is inclusive and culturally responsive. Foster ongoing

collaboration between IC and SIL in supporting student organizations.

Actively attend to the development of a strong Dean of Students Office

team, ensuring proactive communication, collaboration, and creativity

across the functional areas. Engage area directors in strategic planning,

area and departmental goal setting, and ongoing assessment that aligns

with divisional goals and learning outcomes.
