Position Summary


The Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Academics for Teaching and Learning provides leadership for faculty development, curriculum development and improvement, and academic program assessment in collaboration with Deans, Department Chairs, and Program Directors.

The AVP serves as a senior advisor to the Vice President for Academics, is a voting member of Academic Council, is a member of the Academic Program Review and Support team (APRST), and reports to the VP for Academics


Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT), including the Instructional Design (ID) team
  • Develop and facilitate programs that foster instructional and leadership development for university faculty, department chairs and academic program directors
  • Engage and support faculty in the development, evaluation and improvement of curricula to ensure rigor and quality of courses and academic programs across all delivery modalities
  • Oversee academic assessment of student learning outcomes in collaboration with university assessment committees and program faculty, to ensure that all programs demonstrate quality processes, evaluation and improvement
  • Lead faculty development in effective practice in the evaluation and improvement of teaching and learning at the course level (effective instruction, strategies for measurement such as teaching observation), and assessment of student learning outcomes at the program and university levels.
  • Support curriculum evaluation and improvement for all departments undergoing Academic Program Review (APR), including implementation of recommendations made to strengthen or modify academic programs
  • Advocate for highquality, evidencebased teaching and learning across all delivery modalities
  • Support improvement of course syllabi, and use of university template
  • Oversee faculty orientation programming
  • Serve on Faculty Summit committee (ex officio)
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Ability to both lead and manage a highachieving team in a fastpaced environment
  • Member of a Christian congregation; CUWAA gives preference in hiring to members of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS)
  • Supportive of the mission and values of Concordia University Wisconsin/Ann Arbor

Education & Experience

  • Earned doctorate or other terminal academic degree appropriate for a faculty appointment at CUWAA
  • Prior experience as a faculty member in a college or university setting; a proven record of success as a teacher and scholar
  • Ability to effectively manage and lead a team of professional staff to support university goals and objectives
  • Previous experience in faculty development and leadership development
  • Experience with academic assessment as well as development and revision of curricula to foster improvement of teaching and learning
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with faculty and academic leaders to ensure rigor and quality of courses and academic programs across all delivery modalities

Compensation & Benefits
This is a full-time, exempt (salary) position. The starting wage is dependent upon individual qualifications and experience.
