    ABOUT VOORHEES UNIVERSITY


    In celebration of its 125th year of existence on April 7, 2022, Voorhees College was renamed Voorhees University to honor founder, Elizabeth Evelyn Wight.

    Voorhees University is a private, diverse, historically black, coeducational, liberal arts, baccalaureate degree-granting institution affiliated with the Episcopal Church.

    Located in rural Denmark, South Carolina, the University serves traditional and nontraditional students primarily from South Carolina and the southeastern region of the United States; however, seeks to expand our reach both nationally and internationally.

    The Special Assistant to the President for Becoming Beloved Community and Governmental Relations serves a critical role in providing leadership and direction for advancing the University's strategic goals and the President's priority of uplifting the ambition of campus and community citizens.


    THE VISION OF THE BECOMING BELOVED COMMUNITY FOUNDATION


    In 2021, as the newly named President of Voorhees University, President Hopkins has had the pleasure of serving on the Board of Trustees for the Association of Episcopal University s (AEC) and to engage with the United Black Episcopalians (UEB).

    Inspired by the keynote address presented by Presiding Bishop Michael Curry at the 2021 Annual AEC meeting and from reading his latest book, Love is the Way:

    Holding on to hope in Troubling Times (2020), President Hopkins has worked with University constituents to develop the Becoming Beloved Community Initiative/Foundation.

    Currently, this platform at Voorhees University includes the following major tenets:

    Center for Community Engagement and Development; Center for Women's Empowerment and Advancement; Social and Environmental Justice Institute for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; Voorhees University Pictorial Museum; Bamberg School District 2 Academic Partnership; and, the Rural Community Development Institute.


    GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION
    Reporting directly to the President and CEO, the Special Assistant to the President for Becoming Beloved Community and Governmental Relations provides explicit leadership in the development of Becoming Beloved Community Initiatives as Presidential priorities and serves

    as the President's primary governmental relations liaison.


    • The Special Assistant to the President for Becoming Beloved Community and Governmental Relations works collaboratively with Executive Cabinet colleagues to provide assistance, resources, and/or additional staff support for development and follow-up on issues/concerns, projects, or programs emanating from the Office of the President.
    • The Special Assistant to the President for Becoming Beloved Community and Governmental Relations serves as a chief advocate for and promotes the Becoming Beloved Community initiatives, including assist in facilitating funding efforts for the Becoming Beloved Community Complex.
    • The Special Assistant to the President for monitors and analyses proposed local, state, and federal legislation, emerging issues, and trends and prepares reports and informational documents to inform and support the President.
    • The Special Assistant to the President for Becoming Beloved Community and Governmental Relations is responsible for performing work involved in establishing and maintaining mutual communication between local, state, and federal agencies, the general public, and various other pertinent publics with Voorhees University.


    Additionally, The Special Assistant to the President for Becoming Beloved Community and Governmental Relations will have excellent interpersonal and written communication skills as well as the ability to work well with all members of a diverse college community.

    He or she will have experience working with senior executives, community partners, local, state, national and international constituencies.

    Position Schedule: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Monday - Friday (Evenings and weekends required; Travel required)


    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION
    The Special Assistant to the President for Becoming Beloved Community and Governmental Relations has primary responsibility to include:


    • Work with the President to develop the President's governmental and legislative agenda.
    • Represent community positions and interests at legislative sessions, highlighting the Becoming Beloved Community initiative.
    • Direct Voorhees University policies and practices toward local, state and federal governments, and ensure lines of communication are available to the public.
    • Remain current on existing and proposed legislation, meeting with local, state, and federal government officials and lobbyists, and updating the President on relevant laws and regulations.
    • Research, monitor, and analyze and evaluate local, state, and federal legislative and regulatory issues and their impact.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
    Required Qualifications & Experience


    • An earned terminal degree from an accredited four-year college or university preferred, master's degree considered;
    • At least five years of experience in positions of leadership that include a focus on campus improvement and development;
    • Experience successfully engaging local, state, and federal representatives;
    • A record of successful planning, implementation, and evaluation of legislative engagement;
    • Demonstrated record of successfully planning and executing activities to foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment for students, faculty members, and staff members;

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    • Standard Office Environment.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Exercised ability to manage complex academic organizations, work effectively and collegially with all members of the campus and community;
    • Exhibit excellent communication skills, sound judgement and decisive leadership;
    • Demonstrated history of strong leadership and successful implementation of complex initiatives;
    • Demonstrated experience with budget management;
    • Track record of successful grant raising and scholarship in higher education;
    • Previous experience working in a liberal arts environment;
    • Strong written and oral communication proficiency;
    • Demonstrated leadership in education;
    • Exceptional management competency;
    • Leadership driven by Policy and Procedures;
    • Internal and external relationship building;
    • Must promote accountability and integrity in advancing an overall commitment to the University's core values with an additional familiarity, dedication, and loyalty to the institution's history and traditions steeped in the Episcopal Church;
    • Exceptional customer service and professionalism;
    • Great sense of humor.
