DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:


TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES (Illustrative but not exhaustive):
Assists in the maintenance, repair and construction of streets, sidewalks, water lines, drainage or sewer systems which include digging and backfilling trenches and spreading asphalt, sand and/or gravel with hand and power tools;
Puts out and removes safety barriers around excavation and rehabilitation projects;
Performs general manual labor such as cutting trees, removing debris, raking leaves, trimming trees, cutting grass and weeds, painting and moving furniture and assisting in the collection of rubbish and litter;
Participates in snow and ice removal and control including shoveling snow and acting as wingman when plowing is needed;
Operates various types of motorized equipment;
Operates power driven tools such as saws, compressors, drills, mixers, jackhammers and pumps;
Operates hand tools such as scythes, lawn mowers, forks and rakes in grounds maintenance and beautification work;
Assists in building and repairing curb's, sidewalks, culverts and retaining walls;
Cleans and flushes streets, culverts and catch basins;
Assists in assembling and placing snow fences, barricades, picnic tables and related recreation equipment;
Performs minor mechanical repairs and routine maintenance on automotive equipment;
Assists skilled workers in a variety of maintenance and repair tasks;
Performs cleaning duties such as sweeping and mopping floors, stairs and halls, washing windows and sinks, etc;
Loads and unloads vehicles and may deliver supplies;
Takes messages by phone and radio concerning traffic and pedestrian hazards and passes information to a supervisor for action;
May assist in the preparation, laying out and maintenance of athletic fields and areas designated for beautification by clearing, grading, reseeding, weeding and lining;
May be responsible for security of building and equipment during non-work hours;
May pick up animals killed in traffic accidents in the absence of the Dog Control Officer.

When assigned to the Department of Solid Waste:
Transfers recyclables from curbside into vehicle;
Sorts and arranges materials by category;
Assists during offloading of items at Recycling Center;
Directs materials to conveyers;
Sorts items by category;
Directs sorted materials to balers or containers;
Cleans all areas of Recycling Center as needed.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Working knowledge of the operation of motorized equipment used in the maintenance and repair of streets, water and sewer lines, buildings, parks and recreation areas, etc;
Willingness to perform routine manual tasks;
Ability to perform preventive maintenance and make minor adjustments to assigned equipment;
Ability to read and understand assigned equipment operational and servicing information;
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
Ability to take and relay messages received by phone and two-way radio;
Ability to read and write;
Willingness to work outside in all weather conditions;
Mechanical aptitude;
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Valid drivers license

$18.65 per hour
