The Lab Assistant III is responsible for supporting the Histology department with all clerical and ancillary duties in keeping all equipment ready to run, reagents prepared, inventory available for patient output.

This position works under the direction of the supervisor and follows standard Laboratory procedures and policies.

Responsibilities

Handles, prepares, and loads/unloads stainers, conducts dehydrating and cover slips slides utilizing manual or automatic systems.
Prepares, cleans, sterilizes, maintains, and shuts down Laboratory equipment, accessories, and instruments.
Responsible for filing, tracking, retrieval, and accurate record keeping of documents, specimens, blocks and slides.
Maintains diagnostic viability of all specimens and ensures correct patient labeling of all materials. Routinely checks and verifies that surgical case numbers of match blocks and slides; prints Labels as appropriate.
Records in Laboratory logbooks all slides and stains prepared. Logs appropriate information into the Laboratory Information system.
Responsible for Laboratory Inventory management
Perform hazardous/medical waste collection and proper preparations for disposal.
Reagent preparations and aliquoting of solutions
Specimen storage management and specimen send-out coordination.
Accurate data entry of patient and lab data into laboratory information system.
Maintains and monitors daily QC of the lab environment and equipment.
Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

Qualifications

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required, bachelor's degree in biological sciences strongly preferred.
5+ years lab experience is preferred.
Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
All laboratory personnel will be required to maintain schedule flexibility and when problems arise, may be required to work overtime.
Manual dexterity to use common laboratory equipment and perform sterile techniques as required.
Strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
Ability to transcribe information from documents (physical and digital) into various computer systems.
Ability to work independently and in a Team environment.
Flexible enough to adapt to the changing needs of the lab.
Ability to anticipate and react to potential complications in the lab.
Independent judgement for troubleshooting issues.

Lab Specific Qualifications

Visual acuity (including color discrimination) and analytical skill to distinguish fine detail.
Ability to tolerate extensive periods seated and/or standing.
Must possess ability to perform repetitive motion.
Ability to lift pounds.
May have exposure to extreme temperatures, high noise levels, fumes and bio-hazardous material/chemicals including formalin in the lab environment.
May be required to handle blood-borne pathogens (human specimens, tissues, and bodily fluid).
DOT, EHS certification or training.
