DESCRIPTION


The Dane Count Department of Veterans Service has a full-time (1.0FTE) vacancy for an Assistant Veterans Service Officer position in Madison, WI.


The Eligibility List created will be used to fill future vacancies over the next six (6) months. All are encouraged to apply.

DEFINITION


Under general supervision, to assist veterans and their dependents in obtaining benefits to which they are entitled; to provide a referral service to other community resources; and perform related work as required.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES


Interviews people to determine their VA benefit needs; advises and assists veterans, their dependents and survivors in the areas of eligibility, employment, education, medical and dental care, insurance, burial benefits; studies laws, regulations, and administrative codes to ensure adequate knowledge of benefits; interprets laws and regulations for clients to aid in their understanding; assembles various types of legal evidence necessary for the development of facts for claims; processes claims; develops knowledge of other government agencies and community services available to clients; maintains good working relationships with such agencies and community services for the information and referral of clients; acts as a designated representative for veterans and their dependents and survivors in appeals procedures before the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs; acts as an advocate in ensuring veterans get benefits to which they are entitled.


EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education, Training and Experience:


Any combination of education, training and experience equivalent to high school graduation and four (4) years of full-time experience working with the public providing information on complex rules and guidelines.

Full-time study at an accredited college in psychology, social work or a related field may be substituted on a one for one basis for experience.


Must be an honorably discharged veteran as specified in Wisconsin State Statute 45.80.

Special Requirements:


Must have (or be eligible for) a valid Wisconsin driver's license, have a good driving record, have access to personal transportation.

Incumbent will be required to obtain USDVA accreditation.


Background Check Statement:

Some positions may require a criminal background check which can include fingerprinting due to the nature of the job's responsibilities.

Wisconsin's Fair Employment Law, s , Wis. Stats., prohibits discrimination because of an arrest or conviction record.

However, Dane County may disqualify an applicant if the position's responsibilities are substantially related to the applicant's criminal history (e.g., the nature of the crime and its relationship to the position, whether hiring, transferring or promoting an applicant would pose an unreasonable risk to the business, its employees, customers and vendors, etc.).

Management reserves the right to make employment contingent upon successful completion of the background check.


For Bilingual Positions:


1) Provide services in both English and the required foreign language (e.g., Spanish, Hmong, etc.), including oral interpretation and written translations in that language.

2) Applicants being considered for Bilingual positions will be tested during the recruitment process.

This may consist of either being able to respond to questions in that language (e.g., Spanish, Hmong, etc.) during the interview; or passing an oral translation (English to foreign language / foreign language to English) exam prior to employment.


Physical and Environmental Work Requirements:

Professional office work environment. Work involves walking, sitting, standing, bending, stooping, twisting, turning, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, grasping, and reaching within normal ranges. Ability to lift and move a variety of work-related materials weighing up to 25 pounds (with/without assistance). Prolonged computer and phone use. Manual dexterity using fine and gross motor skills. Ability to speak and be heard by others. Ability to see and hear within normal ranges with or without corrective devices.
