Job Duties

This opportunity is based at our Culpeper District Office located in Virginia's Piedmont region.

Culpeper District has two of the state's interstate highways which traverse the district from east to west — I-64 in Albemarle and Louisa counties, and I-66 in Fauquier County.

Additionally, one of the state's three major north-south corridors, U.S. 29, runs through the center of the Culpeper District.

The VDOT Worker's Memorial, located on I-64 at Afton Mountain, is located within the Culpeper District, and serves to increase public awareness of the sacrifices made by state highway transportation workers.


Core responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting the Resident Engineer to coordinate, integrate, and manage VDOT resources within the residency program.
  • Serving as the focal point for services, and primary contact for local governments on activities impacting the local geographic region.
  • Supervising the residency Small Projects Engineer and performing preliminary traffic engineering analysis of moderate complexity.
  • Administering VDOT land development activities in assigned geographic regions regarding landuse policies, procedures, and guidelines
  • Managing resources and staff allocated to the program to accomplish objectives.
  • Representing the Department and effectively communicating and responding to all internal and external customers.
  • Managing program budget resources serving as the Warrenton Residency Staff Engineer.
Approved safety shoes required. (Eligible for a reimbursement)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Skill in developing and managing effective relationships with employees, citizens and public officials.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse audiences.
  • Experience with land use and development activities to include rezoning and public meetings.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • Experience managing and directing activities related to staffing, budgeting, planning, prioritizing, scheduling, problem solving and training.
  • Valid Professional Engineer's license.
  • Safety shoes required in the field.
  • Skill in the use of computers and software programs to include MS Office and engineering design software.

Additional Considerations

  • Progressively responsible engineering and land development experience in a diversified transportation program.
  • Progressively responsible experience managing a transportation maintenance program.

VDOT is an emergency response agency, and this position may be required to assist during emergency operations, requiring work outside of normal work hours to ensure the safety of the traveling public.

Fingerprint based background check, employment references, work history, and DMV driving record will be verified prior to employment.

VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by the Department of Human Resource Management (DHRM). Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
