    The Development and Alumni Relations team at Berkeley Haas engages and cultivates alumni, parents, friends, corporations and foundations to advance the vision and mission of the school, inviting these key constituencies to provide volunteer leadership and make philanthropic investments in support of the school's students, faculty and programs. The Development team of major gift and annual gift officers cultivates prospective donors, both nationally and internationally, to inspire transformational gifts in support of Berkeley Haas and provides staff support for high-level volunteer groups, such as the Berkeley Haas Advisory Board. With 42,000 living alumni, the Alumni Relations team develops and builds greater awareness for career services, lifelong learning, and networking resources to support the engagement, learning, and connectedness of Berkeley Haas alumni.

    Responsibilities

    The Associate Director, Student-Alumni Relations and Philanthropy Education is a pivotal member of the Alumni Engagement team within the Haas Development & Alumni Relations (DAR) unit. Reporting to the Director of Alumni Engagement and Leadership Development, the position is designed to facilitate the introduction and connection of prospective and current students across multiple degree programs to the Berkeley Haas Alumni Network and is responsible for communicating to students and recent graduates the benefits of the global alumni network, student-alumni resources, and the importance of giving back to the School. Through the design, development, and implementation of strategic programs, the Associate Director fosters a sense of community between students and alumni. The role oversees initiatives geared towards cultivating a "culture of philanthropy," and is responsible for partnering with and managing student volunteers across various degree programs as philanthropic ambassadors responsible for engaging and motivating their peers to invest in our school. This position requires a high level of diplomacy and interaction with staff and students at all levels. The incumbent is expected to be an excellent communicator and capable of working collaboratively with students and colleagues across the organization.

    Introduce, Educate, and Connect Students to Berkeley Haas Alumni Network and Benefits

  • Create and deliver content to introduce and connect prospective and current students to the alumni network, build and codify student-alumni engagement, and support the transition from student to post-graduate alumni life
  • Train students on student-alumni networking best practices platforms, including but not limited to: @cal alumni directory, LinkedIn, Slack, etc.
  • Collaborate with program offices, MBA CMG & UG Career Center, and other on- campus and DAR partners to identify additional opportunities and leverage existing events, including admissions sessions, new student orientation, networking events, and training workshops to deliver programming that enhances the exposure, and showcases the value of the Berkeley Haas Alumni Network to current students.
  • Creates and delivers timely content to students regarding alumni benefits, programs, and events through in person presentations, monthly student-alumni newsletter, Slack, and other communication platforms.
  • Innovation and Implementation of Student-Alumni Engagement Initiatives

  • Manage comprehensive student-alumni relations initiatives related to alumni network strategic vision and engagement goals, overseeing student-alumni volunteer opportunities, events, and communications.
  • Identify and facilitate opportunities for impactful student-alumni connection and engagement.
  • Act as a liaison between students and the Development and Alumni Relations office. Manages and responds to student requests for alumni support, including coordinating alumni panels and speakers, identifying and sourcing alumni for specific requests and collaborations
  • In partnership with the Alumni Engagement team colleagues, establish connections between alumni groups and both MBA and UG student-run clubs and organizations facilitating continual interaction as appropriate for pipeline development.
  • Meet regularly with MBA and Undergraduate student government leaders (VP of Alumni) to support, advise and identify additional opportunities for Student-Alumni connections; Host, attend, and present at student club meetings.
  • Manage a portfolio of student/alumni mentorship programs for Undergraduate and MBA students. Oversee project plans, management of student volunteer leaders, and recruitment of student mentees and alumni mentors; Serve as contact for external and internal mentorship platforms.
  • Develop and oversee initiatives that aim to foster a "culture of philanthropy"

  • Train and manage VPs of Philanthropy and student volunteers across various degree programs as philanthropic ambassadors responsible for engaging and motivating their peers to invest in our school.
  • Assist student volunteers in accessing and customizing social media toolkits, and help them craft communications for campaign events such as class campaigns, Big Give, and other student philanthropy activities.
  • Create compelling fundraising copy for student newsletters and other giving-related materials; Collaborate with fundraising staff to identify opportunities to incorporate additional messaging that reinforces and cultivates a culture of philanthropy.
  • Collaborate with UDAR (University Development and Alumni Relations) staff to assist student volunteers in leveraging crowdsourcing and crowdfunding for successful campaign execution.
  • Work with the DAR Information Strategy & Analytics team to ensure timely tracking and reporting of student campaigns, as well as proper stewardship of student donors.
  • Actively participate in a DAR-wide committee dedicated to driving the school's Culture of Philanthropy initiative

  • Required Qualifications

  • Advanced experience collaborating as a valuable member of a cross-functional team with multiple partners and priorities with advanced knowledge of practices and procedures related to establishing and sustaining effective working relationships across internal and external constituencies.
  • Strong social and networking skills with the ability to identify and connect newly-admitted and current students, and recent graduates with alumni constituency groups.
  • Advanced written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including skill to produce information that is appropriately presented and effectively received by target constituencies.
  • Advanced project management skills, including demonstrated ability to plan and implement successful events and programs from beginning to end, including setting and meeting goals and deadlines.
  • Highly developed organizational and time management skills with ability to manage and perform multiple simultaneous tasks and assignments efficiently in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Advanced skills to analyze information to strategically communicate insights to external stakeholders, and provide program recommendations, budget allocation for student initiatives, and identify avenues to promote volunteering and philanthropy at Berkeley Haas.
  • Thorough understanding of volunteer engagement strategies including recruiting, empowering and stewarding volunteers with experience team building and goal setting within a diverse community.
  • Knowledge of fundraising and donor relations concepts, principles, and practices.
  • Experience independently taking initiative and solving problems with exceptional judgment, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Adept at swiftly identifying, mitigating and/or addressing unforeseen events to prevent negative impacts on campus relationships while keeping senior management appropriately advised and notified.
  • Available to work occasional evenings and weekends (with advance notice).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrating a desire to promote diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging to establish and maintain positive & professional working relationships with colleagues, students and team members.

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of the campus and the Haas School, its strategic plan, vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements, issues of concern and infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of issues of concern and trends in higher education, preference for advanced knowledge of public institutions of higher education.
  • Experience in orchestrating and managing mentorship programs.
  • Experience with Cal Advancement Data System (CADS) or similar database.
  • Salary & Benefits

    This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for UC Benefits.

    Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
