This position will serve as a 4-H After-School Educator, 4-H and Community Nature-Based Educator for Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Broome County.

This incumbent will provide comprehensive 4-H youth development opportunities for youth grades 2-5 in the Binghamton City School District, implement existing Nature-Based programming, education and activities for adults and children on birds, mammals, insects, trees, pond studies as well as other Nature-Based programing that aligns with the Nature-Based Plan of Work.

This position will provide instruction using established 4-H curriculum in environmental science and natural resources, science, technology, engineering/environment, art/agriculture and math (STEAM).

The position will utilize a variety of delivery methods to provide research-based information, programming development of lesson plans, and activities including direct teaching, field programs/tours, workshops, mass media, newsletters, and online.

This position will interact with the public through program delivery initiatives, community outreach activities, and partnerships.

This position will refer questions to appropriate specialists within Cornell Cooperative Extension, regional specialists, the state-wide Extension System, or to other agencies as appropriate.

Under the direction of the RootED After-School Supervisor and Environment Program Lead, this position will work with community members, students, school staff, related service providers, non-profit entities, and municipalities to support both RootED after-school STEAM and nature-based education.

This position will also coordinate administrative aspects of the Nature-Based Education Program and will assist the Environment Program Lead with marketing and fundraising efforts for 4-H and Community Nature-Based Education Programming.


Required Qualifications:


  • Specify required minimum equivalency for education, experience, skills, information systems knowledge, etc._
  • Associate's Degree or equivalent education (High School Diploma/GED and one (1) year of transferrable prograM/Functional experience).
  • Experience relevant to the role of the position.
  • Valid New York State Driver's License and the ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to meet acceptable background check standards (DMV and criminal background checks).
  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Specify preferred specialized education, field and/or certifications._
  • Demonstrated understanding and familiarity with education, ecology, animal science, natural resources, agriculture, youth and or human development highly preferred.
  • Experience with 4H Youth Development education in Cooperative Extension or other youth development organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, teach and evaluate informal educational programs through a variety of delivery methods to reach individuals and groups; adults and youth.
  • Demonstrated ability to function as a team member working with volunteers and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize reference materials for programming purposes.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively through oral, written and visual means.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize computer technologies for educational and communication purposes.

$22.47 per hour
