Summary:
The person in this position builds most new dies and repairs most styles of dies along with building jigs, fixtures and manufacturing of machine parts with minimal assistance from others.
Problem solving is key; analyzing potential problems in all stages involved in die building process. As the person gains die design/building experience, he/she provides feedback and suggests improvements.Essential Functions:
Reviews blueprints and understands die designs. Analyzes how the die works before it is made, and finds potential problems.
Identifies steps of die construction before any work starts, and organizes the steps of die construction in order to avoid scheduling problems.
Performs most repair work [on dies] by planning the appropriate method (using own concepts), then subsequently completing the job.Operates all machines at their maximum rate of productivity, while holding tight tolerances.
Assumes responsibility for the different setups in grinding, milling and jig boring operations. Plans different styles of setups as required.
Arranges layout of tool steel and related components on die set, and records instructions for drilling, sawing. Works with EDM operators by giving oral or written burning instructions.
Assists with heat-treat and drawback of tool steel, making efficient use of oven time.
Assembles die using all necessary components when available, and substitutes when required.
Gains continuing understanding of the assembling of dies using all components necessary whether drawn [on a print], planned or improvised.
Checks tool steel clearance. Checks timing of die (cutoff to form). Checks slug holes and other interference's, and all other die related operations.Organizes time and material allotment for all their jobs.
Tests own dies, making sure they function properly and are ready for inspection by Quality Assurance.
Provides suggestions for saving time and problem solving.
Performs all duties in a safe manner, complying with the safety rules and regulations.
Maintains a safe and clean work area.
Uses Axapta software programs to enter time/payroll information, job information, etc.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Graduation from high school or equivalent
Experience and Skills Required:
At least one year of recent related tooling and shop experience which includes the following skills and abilities:Working knowledge of the production process and metal fabrication machines to aid in the continuous quality improvement of the dies that he builds.
Strong working knowledge of the equipment, materials, methods and practices used in production tooling operations.Strong knowledge of related safety requirements to include proper us of safety equipment and proper safety precautions.
Ability to understand, follow and issue routine oral and written instructions.
Ability to problem solve in the press area, with minimal help.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
