The permanent/full time Supervising Registered Nurse (Safety) will be directed by the Coordinator of Nursing Services (Nurse Administrator) in Central Nursing Services at the Department of State Hospitals - Atascadero (ASH). The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to:
• Schedule nursing staff in NOD to meet standards of coverage. Review staff overtime and use of unscheduled time off, audits for patterns and trends and provides recommendations for improvement and/or initiates corrective action.
• Evaluate training needs, schedule necessary training through the CNS Training Coordinator, prepare annual training plan in cooperation with the CNS training coordinator and the Training Department.
• Monitor and maintain compliance with JCAHO, Licensure and OSHA standards including policy and procedure development.
• Ensure competency and compliance with nursing policies and procedures, hospital administrative directives, Joint Commission and licensure requirements; ensures audit systems are in place for procedures including restraint/seclusion, security inspections, communication log, and monitors these on a regular basis for compliance.
• Review Emergency Drills, Fire Drills, SIR's and associated reports.
• Adjust regular schedule in order to provide leadership and supervision in NOD periodically and during critical situations or whenever directed by the Nurse Administrator.
• Take an active role in implementing operations to meet departmental and hospital EEO standards. Assure performance standards are met, as required by hospital policy and relevant State law, through the annual performance evaluation process.
• Evaluating and monitoring the quality of care provided; observing and intervening in patient behavior that may injure people, damage property or signal impending escape attempts, applies and demonstrates knowledge of and correct methods in the Therapeutic Strategies and Interventions (TSI).
• Responds and participates in emergency behavioral/medical situations.
• Assist staff in assessing and authorizing Restraints and Seclusion, giving first aid and CPR, and following infection control procedures as needed.
In order to be considered for this job vacancy, you must satisfy one of the following requirements:
1. BE LIST ELIGIBLE: Successfully complete the competitive State civil service exam pertaining to this classification at , OR
2. BE TRANSFER ELIGIBLE: Have current employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable (employees who wish to be considered based on transfer eligibility must meet the minimum qualifications of the classification per DPA Rule 250), OR
3. BE REINSTATEMENT ELIGIBLE: Have obtained previous permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of the legal requirements to practice as a professional Registered Nurse in California. (Applicants who are in the process of securing approval of their qualifications by the California Board of Registered Nurses will be admitted to the examination, but must possess all legal requirements as determined by that Board before they will be considered eligible for appointment.) AND Either I Experience: One year of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a nursing classification comparable in level of responsibility to a Registered Nurse, Range B. Or II Experience: Two years of professional nursing experience in a facility licensed for inpatient care. (Possession of a Master's Degree in Nursing may be substituted for one year of the required experience.) (Candidates who are within six months of completing the experience requirements will be admitted to the examination, but they must complete all requirements before they will be considered eligible for appointment.)
