Our Unit

Our 14 bed intermediate/stepdown unit cares for pre and post op surgical patients requiring intermediate or stepdown level care related to vascular surgery, small and large bowel surgery, thoracic surgery, radical neck or osteotomy surgeries.

You will gain hands on experience with managing surgical equipment such as chest tubes, NG tubes, surgical drains, and epidurals and PCA's.

We also care for medical patients with acute and chronic cardiac and medical conditions that require close observation, interventions, and cardiac monitoring.

Care includes but not limited to arrhythmias, myocardial infarctions, CHF, unstable angina, and other Acute and Chronic medical conditions such as COPD, Sepsis, Pneumonia, DKA.

We perform care requiring:

cardiac monitoring, IV therapy, anti-coagulant therapy, defibrillation/cardioversion, administration of cardiac drips titrating and non-titrating, oxygen therapies such as mid and high flo oxygen, and continuous bipap.

Our Nursing Team
Our team is highly engaged, skilled, and collaborative.

We care for a diverse population honing specialty skills in the post op patient to deliver exceptional holistic care to our patients that include our entire interdisciplinary team.

This allows us to care for patients with various comorbidities in a way that supports each other and creates a healing environment to deliver extraordinary patient-centered care.

Our Orientation Process

We orient all of our nurses by providing a 12-week orientation program with dedicated preceptors complemented by cardiac catheterization lab observation, one on one with our clinical coordinator, and basic arrhythmia training.

We provide ongoing support during and after orientation through our Nurse Residency and Mentor Program. Our nurses have the opportunity to participate in local and national critical care education events. These events support our nurses in developing strong critical thinking skills and becoming expert clinicians in critical care.

Professional Growth

We encourage professional growth of all of our nurses through participation in our facilities shared governance committees, advancement on our hospital career ladder and the Progressive Critical Care Nurse (PCCN) through the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN).

We have a very active local chapter of the AACN through the Greater Richmond Area Chapter (GRAC) that meets regularly and provides continuing education on new innovations in critical care nursing.
