Research Technician

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
The Laboratory Research Technician is a full-time position that serves to laboratory members in a research laboratory.

Primary responsibilities are to help and oversee the daily operations of the laboratory, and run, and/or assist in experiments for research projects under supervision of the project head and the PI of the laboratory.

This includes collection of and accurate recording of procedures and results, maintenance of databases used in the lab, ordering necessary reagents to conduct experiments, preparing reagents and buffers for experiments, and participation in joint upkeep of the lab.

This position requires a person who has a Bachelors degree with experience in biomedical science or a related field, who is detail oriented, is capable of working independently, possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills, and works well as part of a team.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES - Responsibilities comprise, but are not limited to:

  • Assists lab personnel with examining the immune and inflammatory response by antibodies and other stimuli. Genetic manipulation of normal and cancer cells and in measuring repair of DNA damage caused by radiation or chemicals.
  • Techniques used will include: PCR, ELISA, flow cytometry, microscopy, Western and Southern blotting, reporter assays, protein assays, plasmid construction and/or mutagenesis, cell transfections, purification of plasmids, cell cycle studies, animal model experimentation, HPLC, mass spectrometry, biolayer interferometry, and immunofluorescence microscopy. An understanding of molecular biology is a important, including knowledge of cloning strategies, primer design, mammalian expression of proteins, and protein purification and detection.
  • Has responsibility for ordering common laboratory reagents and general maintenance of the laboratory. Maintains, organizes, and catalogs mouse colony, cell lines, common buffers, and plasmids used in experiments. Also, will develop and manage the laboratory website.
  • Aids in maintaining information in databases for plasmids, cells, antibodies, mice, and primers.
  • Participates in upkeep of lab, performs basic maintenance on laboratory equipment (cleans, disassembles, stores, replaces worn parts), schedules preventative maintenance for laboratory equipment, and reports equipment requiring advanced repair.
  • Organizes and accurately maintains written records of experimental procedures and data collection. Data may be represented as graphs, charts, tables, illustrations, slides, and narrative reports. Assist in preparation of manuscripts resulting from data generated in research projects.
  • Participates in and present data at weekly lab meetings and journal clubs.
Work is differentiated from that of a technologist in area(s) of independent judgment, complexity, and responsibility.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors degree with relevant experience will be considered. Research experience, either as previous employment or undergraduate research project preferred, but not required.
  • Must be selfmotivated and able to work independently.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:


Extensive Laboratory Experience, including with sterile cell culture techniques, basic molecular biology techniques-such as plasmid purification, gel electrophoresis, and PCR are encouraged.

Ability to build upon these techniques, learning or helping to develop new ones methods as necessary, to conduct the research project a requirement.

Experience with rodents, and specifically mice, is also preferred.

Basic proficiency in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Adobe Illustrator, and Internet searches.

Duties will be performed in a research laboratory. No direct patient contact will occur or be expected in the future.

Work will be conducted over a forty-hour workweek, but actual schedule can be flexible.
