Summary:


This position helps foster the development and growth of professional learning communities and facilitates job-embedded professional learning around secondary social studies with colleagues.

This position provides vision and leadership for teacher growth by working in close collaboration with the school leadership, central office, and school based staff.

Supports the building of staff capacity to meet the goals outlined in the district's strategic plan and school improvement plans, to inspire 21st century learning tools and methods.


Essential Duties:


  • Participates in the creation and monitoring of district social studies initiatives.
  • Reviews social studies programs being implemented by the respective schools regarding their effectiveness in meeting school, learning community and district goals for achieving high academic achievement.
  • Assists in developing training in best practices for teachers, educational initiatives and inservice activities.
  • Develops curriculumspecific training during the school year for teachers in identified schools.
  • Develops partnerships with local universities, colleges, business and community leaders to make students globally competitive.
  • Coordinates with social studies partners to teach and provide lesson models for teachers.
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers in selecting, locating and securing instructional materials, developing skills and techniques, assessing current education curricula, and evaluating instructional effectiveness and program success.
  • Analyzes and interprets student and teacher performance data.
  • Develops programming for individual instructional groups by adapting materials and instruction needs to meet the needs of individuals.
  • Conducts classroom observations in order to appraise program and instructional effectiveness; serves as a coach to teachers learning new strategies and instructional methods.
  • Determines the extent to which the standards of excellence and service in instructional programs are being maintained.
  • Participates in the evaluation and selection of materials and equipment appropriate to teaching social studies curriculum in identified schools.
  • Represents the district on social studies at the national, state and local levels
  • Participates in training programs offered to increase individual skills and proficiency related to assignments.
  • Reviews current developments, literature and technical sources of information related to job responsibility.
  • Promotes integration of technology in teaching strategies for inspired teaching and learning.
  • Demonstrates high expectations and models effective strategies for continuous school improvement.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:


Minimum

  • Master's Degree in Social Studies, Education or other related field
  • Three years of successful classroom teaching experience in secondary social studies

Desirable

  • Advanced Degree from an accredited university in content area

Licensing / Certification Requirements:


  • NC teaching license; possession of or ability to obtain NC Curriculum and Instructional Specialist license
