Description

Position Overview:

The trucking industry is becoming more technologically advanced every day, driving innovation in the industry and developing new technologies that are making vehicles more efficient and capable than ever before.

Increasing fuel economy, electric range and reducing greenhouse gas emissions remain key areas of focus for the trucking industry, and Navistar is working on new and innovative fuel-efficient technologies, moving our products into the future.

Improvements in aerodynamics and cooling performance play a major role in this work, along with advances in powertrain, electrification, Automatic Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), and autonomous vehicle technologies.

We are looking for a bright, talented, and experienced aero-thermal engineer that enjoys working with cross-functional teams and is passionate about developing and implementing industry-leading vehicle testing and simulation technologies to drive overall vehicle improvements.

As a
Technical Specialist, Aero-Thermal CFD Analyst, the engineer is primarily responsible for performing vehicle analysis to support aerodynamic, thermal and under-hood cooling development, fuel economy improvement, and greenhouse gas emissions certification for the Navistar commercial vehicles.

This includes developing new strategies and techniques to improve simulation fidelity and efficiency, and to expand the capabilities of the aero-thermal simulation group.

The engineer will also work collaboratively with other groups within the company responsible for vehicle aerodynamics, vehicle cooling, fuel economy strategy, and industrial design.

While 3D simulation is the primary responsibility, there will also be the opportunity to perform and support 1D total vehicle simulation work within the group.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct CFD simulations of vehicle cooling performance and external air flow over trucks, tractor/trailers and buses as well as water management, soiling, and aeroacoustics analyses.
  • Tool development for commercial vehicles including CFD and onroad physical test.
  • Utilize CFD to assess underhood flow distribution, system restriction, and fan and heat exchanger performance. Drive design changes to maximize underhood flow.
  • Supervise physical test and CFD activities contracted to suppliers and consultants.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or Computer Science
  • At least 12 years of experience in product design/development or new technologies and/or computer science experience
  • At least 2 years of experience leading new technologies or specialized technologies
OR

  • Master's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or Computer Science
  • At least 8 years of experience in product design/development or new technologies and/or computer science experience
  • At least 2 years of experience leading new technologies or specialized technologies
OR

  • PhD in Engineering, Engineering Technology or Computer Science
  • At least 5 years of experience in product design/development or new technologies or specialized technologies and/or computer science experience
  • At least 2 years of experience leading new technologies or specialized technologies

Additional Requirements:

Desired Skills:

  • Demonstrable ability to plan, execute and track progress of tasks necessary to complete his/her assignments.
  • Demonstrable ability to derive conclusions from data analysis and make practical recommendations.
  • Familiarity with commercial computational mathematics software (MATLAB).
  • Strong understanding of aerodynamic principles; aeroacoustics knowledge highly desired.
  • Strong understanding of heat exchanger and fan performance characteristics.
  • Strong understanding of heat transfer principles including radiation.
  • Experience using CFD to assess vehicle drag and cooling module performance.
  • Experience using CFD to assess underhood/underbody cavity restrictions and flow distribution.
  • Knowledge of SAE standards for external aerodynamics measurements and onroad vehicle testing.
  • Knowledge of EPA GHG certification regulations and processes for external aerodynamics testing.
  • Knowledge of Star-CCM+ or other commercial CFD software and experience using CFD to assess vehicle aerodynamic performance is a plus.
  • Ability to work within teamoriented environment.
  • Good communication skills: written and verbal.
