The position is located at the California Department of Public Health Tuberculosis Control Branch (TBCB) in Richmond, CA.


The health educator will work on a statewide tuberculosis (TB) prevention initiative, TB Free California, aimed at promoting prevention strategies to reduce the burden of TB disease in California.

The health educator, in collaboration with the TB Free California Director and the TB Prevention Nurse Consultant, will use skills as a seasoned, experienced communications and education professional with a full understanding of practices to develop, implement, coordinate, and evaluate a statewide communication and training strategy focused on testing for and treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) for patients at high risk for progression to active disease.

- Duties include:

  • Develop relationships with new external partners, including community clinics and community-based organizations.
  • Develop and review health educational materials to be used with patients and communities at risk for LTBI
  • Write grant documents and reports needed to maintain funding for TB prevention work
  • Serves as lead for support staff and work collaboratively with multidisciplinary team on statewide TB prevention project.


For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.


Department Description

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Minimum 3 years directly relevant experience
  • At least two years of work experience in one of the following areas: 1. Clinical, academic, or nonprofit health education work or 2. public health practice (as a professional at a local health department or state health department)
  • Highly developed skills and expertise in organizational and project management. Ability to direct projects through from inception to completion on schedule. Organized and able to multitask
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with and advise management and staff, including all types of medical providers. Strong diplomacy skills and ability to develop strong working relationships with external agencies, partners, institutions and community groups
  • Outstanding skills in written and verbal communications with the ability produce highquality reports, documentation, and presentations
  • Proven ability to work with management and staff across departments and to serve as an information resource for stakeholders, providing advice and recommendations on complex issues of functionality and program development. Able facilitate productive meetings and provide highlevel summaries of work

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master of Public Health and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Expertise in infectious diseases, chronic diseases, preventative health, and/or public health programming Graphic design experience (using Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, or similar)
  • Experience managing support staff and/or early career public health professionals
  • Ability to rapidly develop content expertise in latent tuberculosis infection and tuberculosis disease prevention and control, including policies, clinical guidelines, and culturallyspecific best practices
