(Hybrid, 3 days in office - Alexandria, VA)

The Manager, Grant and Development will report to the Director of Government Partnerships and will work collaboratively with other members of the United Way Worldwide Team, as well as outside experts.


Key Responsibilities/ Essential Duties:

The Manager, Grant and Development responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Grant Strategy, Proposal Development, and Research:

  • The primary responsibility will be to support the grant management cycle, conducting the full range of activities required to prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals to government agencies, foundations, and corporate sources.
  • Support program and development staff in the creation of proposals for new development opportunities, including reviewing and contributing to concept notes, proposals, letters of intent, and budgets. Review all proposal budgets and data prior to proposal submission, ensuring accuracy, consistency with technical proposal, completeness, and compliance with funder and Uniform Guidance requirements.
  • Advise on program design, monitoring, and evaluation.
  • Comply with all grant reporting and provide stewardship of current donors.
  • Develop and maintain an indepth understanding of funding mechanisms, funder requirements, budget conditions and spending status for all grants and awards.
  • Tracking timelines for drafts, reviews, deadlines and submission dates.

Grant Reporting & Compliance:


  • Manage and coordinate the approval of agreements, amendments, cost or nocost extensions for UWW awards.
  • Development of communication plans, briefs, summaries and other supporting materials.
  • Work with finance to supply supporting documentation needed for auditing purposes.
  • Contribute to materials such as (donor solicitations, annual report, member newsletters, etc.).
  • Create and manage basic Salesforce records.
  • Assist with other business development projects as requested.

Grants management

  • Attend and actively participate in all partnership and grantrelated meetings.
  • Develop guidance, templates, and toolkits to ensure timely submissions.

Other duties

  • Support development of guidance and training for UWW staff, contractors, and subrecipients, at the start of a new grant or as needed, to ensure effective compliance with relevant federal rules and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:


  • Bachelors degree and at least five years of experience in a similar role in a related field performing similar duties, ideally in nonprofit fundraising, grant writing, and prospect research.
  • In lieu of a degree, at least ten years of experience in a similar role.
  • Experience reading, interpreting and responding to federal funding opportunity announcements.
  • Knowledge of grant submission process is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience working on online platforms such as Zoom and MS Teams.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Applications, especially Word Power Point, and Excel, and cloudbased solutions such as SharePoint and OneDrive for excellent document management.
  • Strong analytical and research skills: Attention to detail with focus on minimizing errors; ability to communicate corrections or changes in a proactive and productive manner.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills (written and verbal); ability to communicate proactively regarding project status, barriers, and possible solutions; ability to provide effective feedback, manage up and horizontally, and initiate new ideas and initiatives.
  • Excellent project management skills, including time management, and the ability to complete multiple high priority tasks within set deadlines, while staying cool under pressure/time constraints.
  • High level of integrity and discretion in handling confidential information.
  • Strong leadership skills and a sense of teamwork that builds positive relationships with colleagues and stakeholders and between divisions, and a willingness to help others and bridge gaps; own and manage projects and collaborate cross functionally especially in ambiguous situations where there might be no clear direction.
  • Inclusivity when working with colleagues with different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
  • Comfortable with change, and able to react to change productively and resolve conflicts.
  • Working experience on a CRM system (Customer Relationship Management), such as Salesforce or similar.
