    Position Description

    This is a Civil Service position located at the Main Library in Children's Services. This position oversees the daily operations of Children's Services.

    Typical Duties
    • Supervises and evaluates employees, counsels with and disciplines employees as needed, and approves leave requests.
    • Schedules work hours to ensure that all public areas are covered.
    • Performs the more difficult or complex professional work in his/her area.
    • Develops and maintains library materials collections.
    • Provides Reference and Reader's Advisory service to the public.
    • Assists the public with the use of library materials and equipment.
    • Receives and attempts to resolve complaints from the public.
    • Performs administrative duties, writes reports, and performs statistical analyses.
    • Promotes children's service programs and library services in the community.
    • Plans and organizes programs or activities.
    • Attends meetings as required.
    • Keeps abreast of new trends in Library and Information Science.
    • Adheres to library Customer Service Guidelines.
    Minimum Qualifications

    Master's in Library Science or Master's in a Library Science field. Degrees must be accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) from an accredited college or university and four (4) years of professional library experience, including two (2) years acting in a lead or supervisory capacity.

    Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
    Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Experience implementing successful children's programming consistent with established goals
    • Knowledge of Children's Literature
    • Fluent bilingual language skills
    Full-time, Civil Service positions -
    10 Vacation Days per year (increasing after 5 years of service)

    Public Safety - Sworn and Civilian positions -
