    EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
    MAINTENANCE MECHANIC 3 (MM3)

    Capital & Asset Management Program (CAMP) - Construction Shop

    Lacey, Washington - Thurston County


    Come be a part of our team at the Capital and Asset Management Program, where we provide essential engineering, construction, and maintenance services to support the agency's facilities, infrastructure, and ecosystems.


    We're looking for someone skilled in operating heavy machinery, who can handle these tools with precision, especially in sensitive areas around utilities and structures.

    Your expertise will be crucial as you work on various projects, from maintaining gravel roads to enhancing streams and wetlands.

    You'll be involved in tasks like installing log jams, erosion control measures, and more.

    Your work will directly impact the maintenance of infrastructure like boat ramps and pipelines, ensuring everything functions smoothly for wildlife and public use.

    Here is what you will be doing,


    Heavy Equipment Operation:

    • Provides expert operation of construction and earth moving equipment.
    • Proficiently operates laser levels to shoot grades and establish various elevations of a job site, correcting or maintaining grade/elevations.
    • Reads and interprets blueprints, drawings, sketches, and specifications.
    • Reads grading plans and cut and fill stakes.
    • Provides subject matter expertise in the recommendations of material and equipment staging, utility location, etc.

    Carpentry:

    • Demolishes or alters buildings, sheds, concrete forms and other structures from plans, sketches, or instructions.
    • Pours and finishes concrete curbs, driveways, walkways, and general pads.
    • Prepares the site for installation by removing old signage and prepping the surface for the mounting, construction, and installation of the new signage.
    • Prepares the site for installation of forestry type gates, performs in the field fabrication and installation of gates and tieback posts.

    Truck Driving:

    • Operates vehicles rated at 80,000 Gross Combined Weight (GCW) or more, including semi-tractor/trailer equipment.
    • Operates truck with lowboy trailer.
    • Operates 12 yd Dump Truck to spread aggregate on road base.
    • Directs or participates in loading and unloading equipment, material, or supplies.
    • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspection of vehicles and trailers to ensure safe operational order and report maintenance or repair issues.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Duties are performed at construction sites in the Hatcheries and Wildlife areas, and on occasion in an office setting.
    • Hazards include working on rough terrain, riverbanks, slippery slopes, and other surfaces, confined and difficult to reach spaces, and in all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat, rain, or snow.
    • Bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, and lifting of 50 pounds repetitively when loading and unloading trucks or moving materials around project site.
    • Operate motor vehicles in hazardous weather conditions such as snow and ice while on mountain passes, highways, and roads (both paved and unpaved).
    • Some tasks will involve working in an office. Office hazards include working under fluorescent light, repetitively entering data into computer, looking at computer monitor for long periods of time, sitting or standing for long periods of time.
    • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
    • Schedule:
    • 6:00 am-4:30 pm, Monday-Thursday.
    • Work overtime as needed/requested. This may include overnight stays and evening and weekend work.
    • Travel Requirements:
    • Travel required 60-80% depending on season.
    • Tools and Equipment:
    • Basic hand tools, power tools such as drills, roto hammers, cut off saws, circular saws, hydraulic punch, metal band saws, welders, cutting torch, plasma cutter, chainsaws, and laser levels.
    • Heavy construction equipment such as excavators, graders, backhoes, and dozers.
    • Construction vehicles such as pickups, dump and boom trucks and various trailers including flat deck, pup, and low boys.
    • Customer Interactions:
    • Frequent interactions varying between Federal, Local, Inter-Agency, and Intra-Agency customers and vendors.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Six (6) years of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction or repair work OR completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a skilled mechanic trade.
    • Three (3) years of experience operating heavy equipment, such as excavators, dozers, and backhoes.

    Note:
    Experience can be gained concurrently


    PLUS:

    • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches and verbal instruction, and order parts, materials, and equipment.
    • Knowledge of:
    • Rules of safe operation of equipment
    • State motor vehicle laws
    • Materials used in servicing and maintaining heavy equipment
    • Rules governing operation of state vehicles
    • Methods, tools, and materials used in servicing and maintaining heavy equipment.
    • Ability to:
    • Operate heavy construction equipment in safe and skillful manner
    • Make adjustments, and repairs to equipment
    • Follow oral and written instructions
    • Keep simple records
    • Work to grade.

    Certifications/Licenses:

    • Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) endorsement with current Medical Examiner's Certificate.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following:


    • Boom Truck Qualification
    • Tanker Endorsement
    • CESCL Certification
